We have some black bears in the far eastern side of my county.
Thankfully no cougars, though. I think my Jack Russell would have been lunch long ago.
Yes, I saw several in Southern Minnesota while I was there, too.
I used to live at the top of LaBrea & loved to hear the coyotes howl at night. I saw a few over the years. We had so many dogs living on that street due to the nearby dogpark that the coyotes could blend right in....and then attack the little dogs. My dog looked like a Bear so he was never at risk. Scrappy little creatures ...
You bet there are. When I was boy growing up in rural Indiana my Grandpaw would pay a $5 bounty for any coyote (he called them varmits, the same deal went for groundhogs too)I could shoot and kill on his farm. (a couple hundred acres in Green Co. Ind.) Not only did I make a few bucks (5 dollars was good money then to a 14 year old boy) but, more importantly, I became a very good shot with a rifle.
They are not uncommon in the Chicago suburbs.
Leaving dog/cat food out and having water out will draw coyotes. Good grieve I wish there were still the coyotes here where I live. I miss their 'calls' in the night and seeing them in the fields. Guess they have gone urban and moved to LA.
That's stupid. Coyotes don't go after anything taller than they are. They eat rabbits for dinner. They walk right by me. Very good looking wild dogs with tan fur. It is illegal to feed them.
How long ago was that?
I've only been in Indiana for about 15 years and was surprised to find them here.
Late 60's - early 70's
Coyote cure.
Softies will wait for wild animals to "cross the street" to safety.
No need. Not protected, no bag limit. You can pile them up like cord wood if you're a good enough shot and hunt in a target rich environment.
I think they had better assert their dominance over the territory or the coyotes will.
Hiding in your homes is not the answer. At the very least a good quality 'walking stick' with a metal knob on the end and the stones to wield it will keep such critters at bay.
If they do not fear man, there will be only trouble.
Among other things, like fawns, they can decimate a deer herd in a couple years if not controlled.
Yeah, upscale, and, while not really downtown, it's pretty darned far into the middle of residential/commercial old L.A. A very, very dangerous neighborhood to go popping with a .22.
In city limits you do need to shut up - discharging a firearm is generally illegal.
A cop I know shot a 125 lb coyote that was walking down Broadway in Malden MA at 7:00 in the morning. He got crap for it.
You were right the first time (pre sarcasm).
The coyotes WERE there first!
Kinda like idiots who buy a house near an airport and then complain about the noise!
Live and let live (and keep your cats and dogs indoors). :-)
agreed. I would be far more concerned with the liberal weenies capping off rounds than they coyotes eating out of the trash cans.
Heck, I've lived in the hills in the LA burbs for almost 50 years, and the coyotes have never bothered us. They help keep the toy poodle population in check, too.
Opps or oops?
