Legislators will debate abortion ban bill (ND legislature looking at total abortion ban)
The Bismarck Tribune ^

Four state legislators are pushing a bill to ban abortion here, a move that could potentially thrust North Dakota into the national abortion debate.

The bill's primary sponsor, Rep. James Kerzman, D-Mott, said his proposed ban would make abortion a crime in all cases except to save the mother's life.

It would establish the ban as law in North Dakota, but only if the 1973 Roe V. Wade Supreme Court decision ever gets overturned.

In seeking a strict ban that does not allow for exceptions for rape or incest, the measure mimics last year's abortion ban in South Dakota, which passed that state's Legislature but was overturned by voters there last fall. The widely publicized measure brought national attention to South Dakota as interest groups from across the country poured money and resources into the fight.

Kerzman said he's not taking a strict approach in his bill to seek publicity, but because he believes abortion in any circumstance is still the taking of a human life.

Now, this is what I like to see. I know 2006 was a tough year with South Dakotans voting to repeal their law. But that doesn't mean the issue should go away. This is a 'trigger' law, meaning it would only come into effect, should Roe be overturned. Louisiana has a similar law.

Note that it's a DEMOCRATIC lawmaker who's behind this. There's also a Democratic co-sponsor. Sounds like North Dakota ain't such a bad place!

The SD vote proved there is no way any state will vote for such a ban absent the rape/incest provision. This will likely end up the same way in ND.

But just the desire to radically change things to pro-babies is proof that the issue isn't dead. So many people care so much for the rights of the babies. It's the d@mn government that has the filthy bloody hands. They are despicable.(Morally reprehensible, vile, wretched)

Lay the blame on the Supreme Court and their serious misguidedness in thinking by giving unlimited infanticide the thumbs-up, that it would somehow "settle" the issue. Kinda like how Dred Scott settled the slavery issue, huh ?

Yeah! you're right. I guess it is the USSC but Congress isn't helping one little bit. They see it as a vote getting issue. They don't care about the babies or the would be-not mothers.

Er, before we get too excited...I think this is just a Dem publicity stunt.

The rape incest ban is such bs.

Either the rape has endangered the woman's health or it hasn't. If it has, it falls under health. And if there are physical abnormalities, you can abort for that. It's BS. It's an emotional appeal.

First of all, SD is not the most pro-life state in the nation---ND is more pro-life, and UT, SC and LA (to name a few) are much more pro-life. Second, the SD legislature passed the abortion ban, but there was a citizen petition to overturn the ban and the voters narrowly overturned it in a referendum. Does ND have such a provision in its state constitution? If not, then the legislature would be the final word (until it got to a court of law and ran into Roe v. Wade, that is).

Pigs have flown.

A ND RAT is sponsoring an abortion ban.

In my state, the RAT attorney general declared a state parental notice law, locked in limbo for many years, constitutional after all.

What's up with these pro-life trends among the RATS? The answer is easy. The RATS are, cynically, positioning themselves to appear more conservative than the Rudy McRomney candidates.
