Biotech leader lashes media ‘lies’ about stem cells

SUMMARY:  The public are being misled by propaganda emanating from vested interest groups determined to keep buried the fact that many patients with failing hearts can be helped by adult stem cells right now.

BANGKOK, Thailand, 11 January 2007 –The retired founder of international biotechnology company TheraVitae, Mr. Don Margolis, has attacked what he calls “media lies and distortions” about adult stem cells.  “The American media has been fed multiple lies by embryonic fanatics at the highest levels of American medicine and even doctors are being misled.”   “A recent US newspaper article, contained not one but two lies that are typical of the propaganda being spread by vested interest groups,” he said. “Firstly it was stated that ‘…it would likely be years before any resulting (adult stem cell) treatment is readily available’, and secondly that ‘…adult stem cells are rare, and the methods for expanding their numbers in culture haven’t panned out’. Both of these statements are demonstrably false and are either deliberate distortions or show appalling ignorance,” he said.

To date, the company he founded has treated over 100 end-stage cardiac patients with a level of success above 75 percent. “This therapy has already saved and improved the lives of those patients.  They were treated in hospitals superior to most in America, and by doctors more thorough and caring than the majority of American cardiologists, and these doctors are fully accredited in America,” he stated. “That is not my opinion but that of over 80% of  treated patients.”  “The company’s hugely successful clinical trial results have been presented to the American Heart Association, so it is misleading in the extreme to suggest that there are no treatments available right now. The company’s scientists are using adult stem cells derived from the patients’ own blood and harvested in their laboratory. They are successfully expanding the stem cells they get from the patient’s blood by roughly 1000 times, which is something the powerful embryonic lobby does not want you to believe, hence the “haven’t panned out” fiction.” he added.

“The tragedy is that seriously ill heart patients, and, more importantly, their doctors, don’t know enough not to believe such lies and not investigate or even consider the treatment that is available right now to help restore the majority of them to a quality of life they thought they had lost forever,” he said.  “The real travesty is the entire medical and academic community is in general disbelief of the health restoration of treated patients and intentionally ignores the factual data.”  “ A responsible press would ensure that statements like those above are better researched and avoid sweeping statements that are not only false but result in American heart patients being told “there is nothing more we can do for you.”  When the patients mention stem cells, a cardiologist, based on everything he knows, might easily say: “Based on what I have read, they are years away!”  Yet adult stem cell treatments are available from top cardiologists on three continents for many of those condemned to suffer and die from heart failure.

Thousands of Americans will die needlessly because of such stories,” he said, “all because those ready to suck up billions of embryonic research dollars manipulate the news, even in respected medical journals, to  convince the public and its doctors that adult stem cells don’t work, cannot work, or don’t exist.”        Jon Whyte is a freelance journalist and editor based in Bangkok. It goes without saying that for the Culture of Death fanatics, abortion trumps everything. In particular, it trumps life, and it removes the primary duty of those working in the field of medicine to "first do no harm."

These people worship money and death. They care nothing for human life or health. The more useless eaters who die, the better.

I vote for the former; they're lying and they know it, but they do so to push their agenda.
