The Free Republic Book Club is an informal gathering of readers and lovers of all genre of books, which meets on an irregular basis, which would whenever I remember to post and have a copy of the ping list available. Actually, the last time we "met" was July of 2005. Sorry about that.
If you would like to be on this ping list -- or if you are on it and wished to be removed -- please send me mail.
If you already sent me mail wishing to be removed and you were pinged anyway, oops, my apologies, please request again. Now that I know how to save the ping list on my User Profile page, it should be easier to update.
This week's topic: What did you read in 2006?
Any favorites? Anything that you would warn others against.
Anyway, here's the list that I saved in My Documents:
I started at least two other anthologies that I put down and will eventually get back to.
I had to return C is for Corpse before I'd finished it.
And there was another Math book, but I forgot to enter it, and I can't find the title. I usually try to read one Math book every summer vacation.
I ended the year reading the introduction The History of the Peloponnesian War, by Thucydides. I was inspired to by threads here on FR, and elsewhere.
Summer reading included a host of graphic novels the library got in:
Comments to follow in the next post.

BFL :)
"Hell, I was There"
"Sixguns"
"Gun Notes Vol 1&2"
"Shotguns" All by Elmer Keith
"Experiments of a Handunner" By Walter Roper
"No Second Place Winner" By Bill Jordan
"Armageddon" By Max Hastings
And a bunch of other stuff.
The End by Lemony Snicket was probably the worst thing I read all year and a major disappointment, even though I wasn't expecting very much from it. The last few books have been more than "Unfortunate" and this one doesn't answer any questions or bring about any conclusions. Mr. Snicket was right: you should avoid his books at all cost.
Best thing I read was "Asimov's Galaxy", which was a collection of editorials from his SF magazine, collected and organized into themes. So the rest of the year was kind of downhill.
18-month later bookclub ping!
Some horse magazine articles
A princess book and "who stole the cookies from the cookie jar" I think that is about it. Maybe you ought to put me back on the list:')

One of the most interesting was Drivin with the Devil a book about the pre-history of NASCAR.
Moonshiners, engine builders for moonshine cars, cops, murder, mayhem and a little bit of Racin thrown in.
Added.
Since you seem to be a fan of Elmer Keith, you need to get to Boise and check out the Elmer Keith "animatronic" exhibit at the new Cabela's store here. They devoted a few hundred square feet to him.
Guests of the Ayatollah- Bowden was good. ..thinking....
Currently reading The Alien Years, by Robert Silverberg
Please add me to the list. I am always looking for new book suggestions.
Seeing as i read construction contracts & specifications for a living, I pretty much don't read for fun anymore.
I like these threads though, so I can more carefully choose that which I do read.
Oops...I meant for that reply to go the the person who started this thread....
Keep me on the list please. Lately, I have not read anything really profound, except for a very interesting account of the 1918 influenza epidemic called "FLU". It was actually recommended by a Freeper, on one of the avian flu threads.
Godless - Ann Coulter
The Brothers Bulger - Howie Carr
Culture Warrior - Bill O'Rielly
Velocity - Dean Koontz
Most recently:
April Morning - Howard Fast
Real Diary of a Real Boy - Henry A. Shute (Available online free through the Gutenberg Project)
Great book. I recommend it to any father who has girls (I have 3...)
