Leadership: Harry Reid has blown off President Ford's funeral because it would be "hard to cancel" his meetings with South America's leaders or put off his junket to Inca ruins. How's that for class?
Reid's visit to a tourist site in Peru, instead of presenting himself as the next Senate Majority Leader at a rare state funeral, shows how little respect he has for Gerald Ford, a good man whose presidency was marked by his willingness to put duty to country first in an effort to heal a wounded nation.
Not so Reid, who put his own agenda above the presidency or the nation's need to bid farewell to its passing leader.
This is no small thing. Reid is the incoming leader of the Senate in a political shift his party insists will mend partisan differences. But already he is showing he is no leader.
If his trek to the Inca ruins isn't distasteful enough, Reid's political ends based on this trip make it even worse.
Instead of paying his last respects to Gerald Ford, he's paying his respects to two of the most anti-American leaders in the region.
His likely reason is to leverage their animosity against the U.S. to use against President Bush. Reid claims relations "need improving." So, instead of supporting U.S. allies, he makes common cause with Ecuador's president-elect Rafael Correa, who showed how much he values America by calling President Bush "a dim bulb."
Reid also is visiting Bolivia's president, Evo Morales, whose power grabs have driven his nation to the brink of civil war. Morales shows his desire for good U.S. relations by aligning with Fidel Castro when he isn't shouting "death to Yanquis" at rallies.

I can't believe what the guy gets away with. He's hanging out with Evo Morales in a bid to harass Bush. It just disgusts me.

If it were the other way around (A Republican Majority Leader skipping a Democrat President's funeral) the media would destroy him - force him out of office there would be so much outrage.
Unfortunately, there are 2 GOP Senators with Reid..and as far as I know..they haven't cancelled either.
Sen. Bennett and Sen. whatisname from New Hampshire..(I will think if it in a minute)..
Don't get me started....
FMCDH(BITS)
Pathetic but not really surprising due to past behavior of his.
If Jimmy Carter or Fidel Castro had died, Reid would have dropped everything ASAP to attend the funeral.
Zackly. The guy has no class.
What's another gross thing he did?
What a miserable excuse for a human being.
Hah, there are many. Last year (I believe) he likened Repubs to organized crime and then promptly apologized while just recently he made over a million bucks from a property deal on property he no longer owned in the Las Vegas area. I don't know if organized crime is present in Las Vegas or not, do you? :-)
Thanks.
I always heard that Vegas was the offlimits spot for all mob families, kind of the neutral ground but I don't know if that rule is changed yet or not. No such truces ever last where the greed of mobs is in play.
I'd think only the worst of Reid, he seems extremely unethical and now he's hanging around with antiamerican dictators.
Someone sent me a note mentioning that there were six of these freaks out junketing on our dime, not just Reid. Reid of course should show some leadership, which he doesn't have, but I agree with that fellow, this tourist junketing while President Ford lies in state is despicable all around.
There once was a tribe called the Incas,
Who got to be known as big drincas.
They worshipped the sun,
And had lots of fun,
But the peasants all thought they were stincas.
(And how is Harry Reid any different?)
LOL...Very good.
The more that I see of the democrats the more I sense that they are the party of sociopathy.
It's going to be interesting when Harry Reid finds out the legislative branch ohf government CAN'T hold treaty negotiations with foriegn powers, which is what these meetings are REALLY all about. And the good senator couldn't stand people like President Ford, who actually had strength of character.Maybe we'll get lucky and Reid will defect
Well said, you know the deal.
