Vista security spec 'longest suicide note in history'
The Inquirer ^ | 12-24-06 | Andrew Thomas

VISTA'S CONTENT PROTECTION specification could very well constitute the longest suicide note in history, claims a new and detailed report from the University of Auckland in New Zealand.

"Peter Gutmann's report describes the pernicious DRM built into Vista and required by MS for approval of hardware and drivers," said INQ reader Brad Steffler, MD, who brought the report to our attention. "As a physician who uses PCs for image review before I perform surgery, this situation is intolerable. It is also intolerable for me as a medical school professor as I will have to switch to a MAC or a Linux PC. These draconian dicta just might kill the PC as we know it."

But this isn't just a typical anti-Microsoft rant. Gutmann's report runs to 6,000 words and contains hardly any FSF-style juvenile invective.

If the Doc has issues...just wait till the Air Force or Marines get the software. Microsoft will likely have to deliver a special edition to them, without the protective side...to entice them to buy into the garbage. Linux will gain more points and start climb by late 2007 as a better software.

"Windows Vista includes an extensive reworking of core OS elements in order to provide content protection for so-called "premium content", typically HD data from Blu-Ray and HD-DVD sources. Providing this protection incurs considerable costs in terms of system performance, system stability, technical support overhead, and hardware and software cost," says Gutmann on his homepage.

If you read the entire 6,000-word report, and if you believe it, there won't be a chance for anybody to get around it. Microsoft will force the hardware people to build the protection into their devices, and keep them from releasing open-source drivers. So even if you run Linux or some hacked Vista, or stay with Windows XP, your new computer will be crippled.

Didn't the early versions of XP register to hardware so you couldn't upgrade your computer without buying a new license o some crap like that. Then Microsucks took it out because of public outcry.

I can't remember for sure but this really sounds familiar.

Vista is not an upgrade from XP. Vista is XP with a few bugs removed and draconian copy protection measures.

BTW, Europe screeched against the new monopoly code, and Microsoft took it out of their Vista operating system to be distributed in Europe. Meanwhile...

Screw that. I'll stay with XP for as long as possible, that is, until games start coming out that will only run on Vista. And even then...

The one about Bill Gates opposing repeal of the death tax is misleading. The "Bill Gates" involved is Bill Gates, Sr.; the *father* of the Microsoft founder. I have not seen Bill Gates the younger (and richer) comment on that anywhere. Might want to leave that one out of your list next time, since it's false and all.

I have not seen Bill Gates the younger (and richer) comment on that anywhere.

He has made public comments that he thinks that inherited wealth is a bad thing for society and while he plans to leave his children a comfortable sum he also intends to give the majority of his fortune to charity.

Gates is giving away his fortune with the same gusto he spent acquiring it, throwing billions of dollars at solving global health problems. He has also spoken out on major policy issues, for example, by opposing proposals to cut back the inheritance tax.
