OGADISHU, Somalia - Ethiopia sent fighter jets into Somalia and bombed several towns Sunday in a dramatic attack on Somalia's powerful Islamic movement, and Ethiopia's prime minister said his country had been "forced to enter a war."
It was the first time Ethiopia acknowledged its troops were fighting in support of Somalia's U.N.-backed interim government even though witnesses had been reporting their presence for weeks in an escalating battle that threatens to engulf the Horn of Africa region.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi went on television to announce that his country was at war with the Islamic movement . . .
"Our defense force has been forced to enter a war to defend (against) the attacks from extremists and anti-Ethiopian forces and to protect the sovereignty of the land," Meles said a few hours after his military attacked the Islamic militia with fighter jets and artillery. . . .

As I already pointed out up thread, not the way the Ethiopians figure it. Though they don't use the Julian calendar, the Ethiopian (monophysite) church keeps the Feast of the Nativity on the same day as the Russians, Serbs, Georgians, and the Patriarchate of Jerusalem: 7 January on the civil calendar (which is 25 December on the Julian calendar and 29 December on the Ethiopian calendar).
Somalia to the right, Sudan to the left. That's a tight spot they're in.
Ethiopia is a very interesting nation with an ancient Judeo Christian heritage. I suggest that all study up on it for the arguments that are sure to come from the left.

Ethiopia, probably the only christian dominated north african country left is sending a warning to the whahabis and 3rd world sharia scum in Somolia.
Ironicly the current Ethiopian government is a byproduct of the Cold War. The current regime was installed by the Soviets and its forces were armed with Eastern Bloc weapons. Ethiopia opposed US interest at the behest of their Soviet backers and was one of the first nations to use mustard gas on Eritrean rebels (backed by Saudi Arabia and US) during the 1980's as the coastal majority Muslim province broke away from Ethiopia, Today the Eritreans (with Iran) are sending arms into Somalia to back the Muslim forces. If the US backs Ethiopia in this war it would be the irony of all ironies. The EU is sitting this one out because they do not want to provoke Iran and lose access to Iranian oil and gas.
I suspect a number of high end attack aircraft -- fly the night skies as "unmarked"......

Ethiopia is supporting Somalia's weakened government against the Islamist forces, which control Mogadishu and much of the rest of the war-ravaged Horn of Africa nation that has been wracked by conflicts since the 1991 ouster of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.
Arab League-mediated talks in Khartoum collapsed in November when Islamists refused to negotiate until Ethiopia withdrew its troops and the current violence ruins any hope of a possible resumption.
