U.S. airstrike kills top Taliban leader
Associated Press ^ | December 23, 2006

KABUL, Afghanistan - A top Taliban military commander described as a close associate of Osama bin Laden and Taliban leader Mullah Omar was killed in an airstrike this week close to the border with Pakistan, the U.S. military said Saturday.

Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Osmani was killed Tuesday by a U.S. airstrike while traveling by vehicle in a deserted area in the southern province of Helmand, the U.S. military said.

Osmani was the Taliban's chief military commander in southern Afghanistan and played a "central role in facilitating terrorist operations" including roadside bombs, suicide attacks and kidnappings, the U.S. said.

Who is Gulbuddin Hekmatyr?

He's a jackass from way back.

Here's a profile of him from 2003, via the BBC.

Profile: Gulbuddin Hekmatyar

Maybe you are the one who isn't clear than. OR you don't understand what I am saying. That seems to be more likely the case. You seem to have some real issues. I feel sorry for you.

IMCO I have the utmost respect for our troops and praise there every effort. The problem is, I feel, is that they are FORCED to fight with one hand and half there brain tied behind there back. Bush, actually kill the enemy!

P.S.Merry Christmas to all FReepers and moderators

American history IS Europoean history. And it is quite a bit shorter, so I have a pretty darn good idea of what happened in the Americas over the last 400 years thank you very much.

German Universtities are crap, but the primary and secondary education are pretty darn good. Plus, I studied in the US. Of course I majored in history so I know that kind of stuff anyway.

The glibness with which Americans, including FReepers, react to this kind of story is discouraging;

I agree with you, Darkwolf. Killing rank-and-file taliban out in the field is one thing, but killing the top commanders is far more important. We should be celebrating whenever these guys get whacked.

Although the interpretation of history as the story of great men has been expanded to include other factors, it is not correct to say that effective leaders or evil geniuses can just be replaced by someone else like interchangeable parts. Often the second in line is a yes man without exceptional talents. The story of Algerian revolt happened within a context of a sweeping demand for independance from colonial domination. Such bids are made mostly out of a thirst for power by a few educated elites and don't really represent a demand of the peasants for better conditions. The later is just Marxist sentimentalism.

And 2008 will be terrible for Conservatives with only Dems and RINOS in the race and Iowa straw polls.

That could indicate that more are on the way. Good news.

...it is not correct to say that effective leaders or evil geniuses can just be replaced by someone else like interchangeable parts.

I don't believe this is what he meant. I think he meant the intelligence being collected from the captured officer means more strikes are on the way; not that the killing of leaders means more will take their place.

It would really make my day to hear this news in a short video clip showing them taking his head to a taxidermist for mounting. If he was #4 then there's now a new #4 to take his place. At least they didn't take him alive like the blunder they did with Saddam. Saddam should have been captured as a corpse, now all we hear is the Saddam Show in the Courtroom Circus that followed.

I went to Germany on a troop ship in Feb 62 after BCT and AIT (Armor Crewman) at Ft. Knox. Got on a train from Bremerhaven to Munich and was picked up in a deuce and a half from the 3/34 Armor, 24th ID, out of Henry Kaserne. Later to be redesignated 5/32 under Reorganization of Army Divisions (ROAD) and moved to Will Kaserne. Two Battle Groups (Bdes. under ROAD) were housed in one giant building across the street in Warner Kaserne. The building had originally been build for the SS. Legend had it that Hitler game for the dedication and said something nasty to the head yapper who built it, and after Adolf left, he climbed to the seventh floor and jumped.

For some reason they needed a flunky jeep driver for the Bn. Commo Officer and I stayed in HHC and out of the tanks for my entire two and half years. I actually had a chance to go to the Davey Crockett platoon and turned it down when I found out I could go to Div Hq in Augsburg for RTT/Morse Code school. Good move. I made buck sergeant before my ETS. I was due to get on another troop ship in Sept 64 and had an appendecitis a couple of days before my scheduled departure from Will Kaserne. After they snipped them out I was too close to my ETS for a boat ride, so I had my first plane ride ever in a C-135 to McGuire, NJ.

Went back in in Nov 65 for flight school. Great memories out of Germany still.

If they got him with what I think they got him with, there's probably no head left.

Big whoop. Reminds me of all the times we killed the "#3 Al Queda leader in Iraq". We could have had Mullah Omar himself dead in 2001 if not for some faggot JAG putting the kibosh on it.
