Uranium in itself is only weakly radioactive. This should be a complete non-story.

it's probably in some sort of bomb proof container; and it's not that much by volume anyway- a hair over 5 cubic feet (uranium is extremely dense)

Authorities seal off the area...but say that it isn't harmful. Why such protective measures if there is no harm?

If I were in the area I'd be trying to find a way to tote it off. That stuff is worth some bucks!

One of two people in the truck suffered minor injuries, and no other vehicles were involved, he said.

"There's no threat to the public," Clendenin said. "It's a low grade uranium."

Nothing to see here.

It's probably Uranium hexafluoride. The Nuclear Fuels division of GE has a facility in Wilmington, NC. Tri State Motor Transit (TSMT) carries most of this material. The UF6 is transported inside several nested containers. There is little or no danger to the public. Definitely not useful for a bomb and in no danger of exploding.
This is all just a guess on my part but I'll bet I'm pretty close.
