I watched a show on divers pulling up stuff from a Spanish galleon. They thought they were being clever by spooning mercury into a scuba tank (72 or 80?) that had the valve removed. I don't remember what the actual, uncompressed volume of a tank is, but the weight of the salvaged mercury was more than the winch could handle.

Pretty wimpy winch! Density of mercury (Hg) is ~13.5 g/cc (water is 1 g/cc). The capacity of a typical dive tank is maybe 12 liters (12,000 cc). So we're talking 162 kg total, or about 76 lbs.

Kewl! That just happens to be the amount in a standard size flask that another poster used to calculate the value of the Hg on the submarine!

Math is a little off. 162 kg = 356.4 lbs. Still pretty wimpy performance for a winch.

zillions of tiny balls

I liked pushing the little balls together to watch them form a bigger ball. I like that stuff. Naturally, I like lead and asbestos as well.

it is interesting that they have found this submarine

That is for sure. I follow these recovery stories closely. I'd love to be there.

I got really bent out of shape when I learned that the stupid French filled a submarine pen with gravel and concrete ... with three U-boats still in them. I still get into a hissy fit when I think of that.

Maybe they were trying to haul it up by hand. I think it saw it in the late 1970s.

I'm sure there are or have been fish with higher than usual levels of mercury in their fatty tissue in the area, but other than that, can't see what the big fuss is about.

people here in michigan have been warned for years not to eat too much fish caught in the lakes due to high mercury levels. What they dont say is that the alleged mercury that is allegedly contained in the larger fish supposedly centers in the fatty area which in the larger fish (trout, salmon etc.) is removed during the filleting process.

As for the other smaller pan fish, they aren't bottom feeders either so how the heck can they be contaminated with mercury? given the humoungous numbers of walleye, bass and perch fishermen on Lake St. clair, I have yet to read of any 3 eyed babies being born.......

Retarded liberals, yes but I don't blame them on the fish......

Pray for cold, pray for ice then pray for perch........

Project Jennifer is a fascinating story. The cover story was that the ship was built to harvest manganese nodules from the bottom of the ocean. That's a loopy enough story that it might not fly, except for the stroke of genius by the CIA in enlisting Howard Hughes to be the front man and alleged bankroll behind the project. Crazy idea? Oh, that's just Howard.

There's an old Time story with more details, at least the ones that were known in 1975. It's all still pretty sketchy, but it's the kind of a story Tom Clancy couldn't make up.

Does Norway have a pretty sophisticated sub or is it Sweden?

Don't see why they don't drop by with divers/UDT types and vacuum the mercury out of the wreck.

Looking for someone else to foot the salvage bill?

I know it's a whole lotta mercury. As I said, it's heavier than the water, so most of it would hang around on the bottom of the North Sea. Currents would push it around some, which would cause some of it to escape, but we're talking movement like that by the molecule.

The Great Lakes have quite a bit the stuff in them, cuz of industry. I can't remember if it was from mining or if it was from the paper industry. I think a lot of inland lakes & rivers also have it. Most of it stays in the sediment on the bottom. If they're worried about it, they should test the fish in the area, cuz it stays in their fatty tissue.

Game fish will eat the bottom feeders & once it gets into a person's or fishes system, it stays there. You're right though, most of the parts of the fish where it stays are removed when the fish is filleted. Most of the warnings are for small children & pregnant women.
