WASHINGTON -- Virginia Sen.-elect Jim Webb said President Bush is a "failed president" who should use his last two years in office to repair America's image abroad by ending the Iraq war through intensive diplomacy.

In an interview Tuesday with the Daily Press, Virginia's newly elected Democratic senator made clear his antipathy toward Bush and his determination to help set a new course in Iraq

Bush critics have cheered Webb's feisty exchange as evidence of his willingness to challenge the president and fight for policy changes.

Let's see if they cheer if he shows equal feistiness against the likes of Leaky Leahy and the Diving Champion. Of course, George Soros would cut off his funding in a heartbeat and he's afraid of a one way trip to Ft. Marcy Park . . . so it'll happen when hell freezes over.

Webb should ask some marines about how to do diplomacy with fanatics. More than a little like entering negotiations with the Japanese militarists in 1945. Basically the only way to deal with them is the way we did with the Japanese on Okinawa.

I have a feeling that many people who voted for Mr. Webb are going to regret it - and soon!

With all due respect to his service, being a Marine does not give magical insight into foreign policy matters. It means he served his country. Now he wants to capitalize on that service and the cachet it has provided to satisfy his emotional needs.

"senator made clear his antipathy toward Bush"

Now, right here and now, let me make clear my antipathy of this dimwitted, boorish, immature and impudent demokaRat.

Just another slug in the chamber, is all that he is.

Witness the triumph of the therapeutic.

All of the talk about diplomacy and talk and consensus really is therapy for the left side of the aisle. They think Iraq and Vietnam show the west is bad for forcing its views on Marxists and fascists, so we need to get guilt off our chests and beg for forgiveness.

It serves no other purpose. It makes us look like George McFly to the most reactionary elements in modern times. People like Sheikh Nasrallah and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are not Mikhail Gorbachev.

In addition, we strengthen the prestige of the bad guys by talking with the fundie leaderships. If we absolutely insist on talking, it should be with the students, the Christian opposition, business leaders-- anybody BUT the apocalyptic Death to America! wackos.

I was at a party last weekend, and Webb's son came home from college. In the hallway, Webb called out, "Hey, son! How was school? Now come over here and let me suck on that d*&%!" He said it was a custom he picked up overseas. Freaky.

Reading between the lines in stories about Webb's relationship with his military son, we should just ask his son what he thinks of GWB and his father's "feelings" about the war.
