Santa Ana Unified adds third week to schools' winter break
The ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER ^ | Monday, December 18, 2006 | FERMIN LEAL

District wants to accommodate families who travel to Mexico and Central America during the holiday season. SANTA ANA – For the Pineda family, a two-week winter break is just too short. Miguel and Anabeth, and their two children from Washington Elementary, use that time off from school each year to visit grandparents and other family spread across three states in Mexico. "It's just a lot of traveling to fit into two weeks," Miguel Pineda said. "We didn't want the children to miss school so we just deal with it." But this year, Santa Ana Unified gave the family an unexpected holiday gift – an extra week of vacation. For the first time, students at all 60 Santa Ana Unified schools will get three full weeks off for the winter break. It's a way to accommodate the district's high concentration of immigrant families, many of whom travel to Mexico and Central America to reunite with relatives for extended Christmas vacations, officials said.

Doesn't suprise me. Santa Ana is the capital of North Mexico.

I guess all pretense of any desire for assimilation (on ANYONE's part) has now been dropped.

They don't teach them anything anyway. The SA school system is rated one of the worst in the country.

Well, I think we've finally discovered one advantage to illegal immigration, at least from a kid's perspective...a longer Christmas vacation.

That's HOLIDAY vacation. We'll let it go this time, but next time it could go much rougher for you.

TEACHERS wanted more time off; spun this to make it sound like a benefit "for the chilluns'".

Santa Ana is the capital of North Mexico.

Yep; has been for quite some time now. Orange County won't be considered a "conservative bastion" for too much longer.

Good. States have been stealing kids' vacations for years. Too bad they'll probably just shorten the summer now. Christmas break should be at least two weeks, and summer should be three months.

Please let me know when the last illegal Mexican slips south across the border. That is when we should close the gate.

I grew up in the SA school system from 1960 through 1972 where my parents had the guts to pull up and leave after I got stabbed in the hallway of SA High School. I laid bleeding in the hall way for 15 minutes b4 any official came to help.

If you were not Chicano or Black in 72, you were a minority. I cannont imagine what it is like now.

If we won't assimilate those from next door, what about the scarf wearers and Chi Coms? No hope they'll ever be assimilated.

My own personal cultural norm is Anglo Saxon, but I don't have a single drop of Anglo Saxon blood. I am a product of successful assimilation. What was good enough for my forebears is good enough for any of today's newbies - don't like it, go home.

This is right out of the Right Wing Conspiracy playbook. We extend their vacations, which encourages them to go back to Mexico, and then when they're all down south, we lock the door behind them! Brilliant!!

Next they will be extending the lunch period from 1 to 3 hours to accommodate the traditional afternoon siesta.

So why don't they just do what we did when I was in elementary school? Get extra vacation time approved by the school, take your stuff with you and keep up with your class.

A cultural import that I fully support.

/in the interest of full disclosure: my mother's family is from Spain, and I've had the pleasure of seeing the tradition first-hand. I envy them to this day.
