NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (AP) -- U.S. Rep. William Jefferson easily defeated his fellow Democratic opponent in a runoff election Saturday, despite an ongoing federal bribery investigation.

In complete but unofficial returns, Jefferson, Louisiana's first black congressman since Reconstruction, received 57 percent of the vote over state Rep. Karen Carter, who had 43 percent.

Carter was unable to capitalize on a scandal that included allegations the FBI found $90,000 in bribe money in Jefferson's freezer.

In a concession speech, Carter embraced family members and pledged to work with Jefferson, especially on the area's recovery from Hurricane Katrina.

"I guess the people are happy with the status-quo," she said.

Won't this just shake your faith in representative democracy. Maybe the founders were on to something when they insisted eligible voters had to be eduacted. I guess this is no more shocking than Marion Berry being elected in DC after getting caught doing drugs on tape.

Except that this crook gets elected to the Congress where his crookedness affects us all.

Thanks a lot, Louisiana.

This wasn't about voters in that district being uneducated. They probably think he does a good job bringing money back and he'll do an even better job under Pelosi as Speaker than Hastert. They look past the bribery because it doesn't affect them directly.

Where's Nancy Pelosi? She promised to sweep the House clean of corruption.

Yoo-hoo, Nancy, clean up in Aisle 5!

It just shows what a lost cause Louisiana politics is. And the rest of the Nation could soon suffer the same fate, if the Republicans keep imploding.

Can we please get the media to address the Democrats continuing theme of re-electing corrupt and scandal ridden politicians while their Republican counterparts are actually held accountable for their actions and resign?

Thanks alot! Wouldn't want to see any bias running around in DC.

Or Gary Studds getting re-elected after....or Clinton being elected after...

Interesting how things that immediately disqualify and disgrace republicans tend to enhance dims in the eyes of their constituency.

We are seeing why pure democracy has historically led to tyranny, as well as why ethics and morals are essential to our form of government.

Madeline Murray O'hare met her just desserts. The question is: how far will we slide towards her fate before we reverse the trend secular multicuturalism has put this nation on ? The essence of which is the rejection of the values and traditions that generate pride in, and the willingness to defend, our nation.

My first reaction was "unbelievable."

Then I stopped to think about it...not-so-unbelievable at all.

That type of election result is why I left New Orleans as soon as I could. They are grade A idiots who don't realize that the people putting them deeper in society's cellar are themselves. They deserve what they get.

"I guess the people are happy with the status-quo," she said.

Make that "Democrats are happy with the status-quo". Numerous scandal ridden Republicans were hounded into resignation or else unceremoniously booted out.

This is actually a good thing for the GOP. Both candidates were RATS but the whole Jefferson thing has not come to boil. If he had lost, they RAT leadership would not have to deal with it. When the final charges come down, the RATS will have to answer questions, take actions, cover their butts, etc. no?

Corruption is the tradition in Louisiana. It has been since the state was a French colony. It is business as usual.

So is it any surprise that Louisiana is a Democrat strong hold.

Happens all of the time in Memphis. Now, one of the City Councilmen is going for a second round in the Federal Pen.

I guarantee that he could be reelected this afternoon.
