Still in Saigon
American Spectator ^ | November 23, 2006 | Andrew Cline

Judging by a lot of the rhetoric coming from the new Democratic majority in Washington, Democrats are not just stuck in a pre-9/11 mentality; they're stuck in a pre-1980s mentality. It's as if nothing has happened in the world since the fall of Saigon.

Before the election, we heard incessantly how reckless President Bush was for stubbornly refusing to listen to his own generals about the situation in Iraq. Gen. Eric Shinseki was referenced who knows how many times. A good president listens to his generals and sets military policy according to their advice, not the other way around, we were told ad nauseam. Rep. John Murtha rocketed to political fame by telling how his own sources within the military command disagreed with the president on Iraq.

The Democrats still loathe our military and want America to lose. In that respect, they're still stuck in Vietnam.

I wonder, if they would stop all this troop rotation in and out, maybe the troops would start to feel the same urgency to wrap this up that the public feels. If the only way to get home and see your girl was to get it done, they would be on the same footing as most soldiers over time, like my own dad in WWII.

That's not how President Lincoln operated during the Civil War. He fired one general after another till he got one that wouldn't stop fighting till the war was over.

I saw a clip on the evening news a couple nights ago. Former Sec of State Henry Kissinger said the war in Iraq could not be won. Apparantly he didn't learn from history that his own failed political agenda from viet Nam is now being echoed once again by him in Iraq.

Most losers will always be losers. And many losers will drag down potential winners because they win the psycological war that shares defeat rather than taking responsibility for defeat.

One addendum...If the American media had held it's tongue, and if the Dems had held their tongues, and if both had constantly printed positive things about our progress and conduct (of which there are and were unending examples) and only concentrated on reporting the deaths of terrorists, the atrocities of terrorists, and the bad character of terrorists, I think the Iraqis would already be self sufficient and peaceful. This because Americans would have been able to do their thing unimpeded and the entire terrorist infrastructure would have been demoralized and defeated mentally as badly as they were physically. Leftist hypocrisy, to me, isn't the issue. Treason is. No nation can win even the simplest of wars if they must battle harder with their own subversives than with the intended enemy. We really need to revisit how we define and deal with traitors.

It's not that I believe that Republicans know everything there is to know about fighting wars and/or protecting the country, it's that I don't believe The Jackass Party knows anything at all about protecting us. From coddling terrorists to pulling out of Iraq too early, the Donkeys perpetually illustrate that they nothing about protecting the country...except for Joe Lieberman. Not one other Dem has the courage to do what's right.

"We really need to revisit how we define and deal with traitors."

1) No Iraq visa for any foreign journalist, except embeds.
2) Prosecution to the fullest of anyone divulging classified information to the press. Jailtime and fines.

That's a start.

"traitors"

We not only have a lot of them, we have many Americans who don't know what their country stands for. For America to continue and survivie as it has in the past, the Islamo-fascists have to be defeated militarily, and liberalism has to be defeated culturally and ideologically. Both will be supremely difficult tasks.

That is supposing that the Democrats and the MSM desired anything good for America. Remember, much as they may say they "love" America they truly believe America to be the source of all the trouble in the world. Their zero sum view of economics forces them to see our prosperity as the reason for the Mohammedan countries' poverty and it is so evil and all wrong. They truly believe that America does not have any right to exist, that America has polluted the planet whereas the third world people, the Noble Savages of the world just naturally take care of the world and keep it pristine with no roads and no buildings and not emissions. These intellectuals truly believe that if they could do away with capitalists and industrialists and polluters they could rule a perfectly clean world where they could ride in their limousines and not encounter any other traffic.

I've been watching these Democrats for several decades now and have come to this conclusion. About half of the American voting population is uninformed, ignorant of the issues and seldom go to the polls and cast a ballot. Whichever political party, Republican or Democrat, that can cause the largest segment of these uninformed citizens to go and vote on election day will usually win the election.

Democrats are always searching for an issue they can use to increase their voting base. They can only wring so many votes out of minimum wage, welfare, and affirmative action and they are always in need of an issue that will appeal to the large population of the ignorant. These Democrats couldn't give a damn about the welfare of the American Service man/woman, but they will use a fake and insincere concern to appeal to the uninformed.

Democrats successfully used this fake concern for American fighting men to win elections in 2006, and they would like nothing better than to keep this war in Iraq going so they will still have an issue to ride through 2008. Without the war, and the Republicans to blame it on, the Democrats will have no issue beyond their socialist welfare state.

You are exactly right. If we fail in Iraq, it is only because of the media and the lunatic left

As the father of a young Stryker Platoon leader currently serving in Mosul, Iraq.......if you're implying those boys are just 'marking time' or sloughing off 'til they get rotated home...you're utterly and completely clueless and are doing them all a HUGE disservice with such callous words.

Now go get educated on some things known as "rules of engagement" and "troop strength" before suggesting such again, please.
