FedEx cancels order for 10 Airbus A380s

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - FedEx Corp. said Tuesday it has canceled its order for 10 Airbus A380 jets, the new jumbo double-decker plane that has been dogged by numerous delays.
The company's FedEx Express unit has ordered 15 Boeing Co. 777 Freighters, and has options to purchase an additional 15, FedEx said in a news release. The company cited Airbus' production delays as the reason for the decision.

This is huge news and a MAJOR setback for Airbust. FedEx has spent a LOT of money already on bringing the A380 online. For them to cancel their order implies they believe the A380 will never get fixed. As of right now, there is no freighter version of the 777 flying, but there will soon be hundreds. This is GREAT news for Boeing.

OOPS!! for Airbus Industrie.
I can see within six months FedEx placing a huge order for the 747-8F cargo plane, since FedEx does do a lot of outsized cargo business.

Wow. Just wow.
Airbus absolutely, positively needs those frieghter contracts, if they are ever to get anywhere close to break-even.
Here's a question... If wiring the seats is holding up the production line, why wouldn't Airbus re-direct some fuselages to frieghters, which have no such wiring?
Answer: Because that's not really the problem.

Jeeze. With all these Airbus cancellations and orders going to Boeing, lead times are going to go way out at Boeing unless they build new plants. For a business, this is a good problem.

As of right now, there is no freighter version of the 777 flying, but there will soon be hundreds. This is GREAT news for Boeing.I have a sentimental attachment to the 777, since my career as a contract technical writer began while documenting two of the avionics devices currently flying on that plane.

If FedEx flew the Airbust,might they have been solely responsible for refitting Memphis Airport? I don't see any other airline flying that monstrosity into Memphis.

Probably because they need these planes sooner. I don't think the 747-8 freighter will be ready until 2008/2009.
Its possible that fedex was supposed to be one of the first to be delivered the A380's and had to quickly find a suitable substitute that could start being delivered to them in the same timeframe.
Anyway, this is great news for Boeing and extremely bad news for Airbust.
