The 'Good Judge' Antonin Scalia's two decades on the Supreme Court
The Weekly Standard ^ | 11/13/2006 | Terry Eastland

"My only agenda is to be a good judge."

--Antonin Scalia, in his 1986

Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing During this time of conservative angst, of worry about what conservatism stands for and means, why not consider the contribution to the country of someone who is not a politician but a judge--actually a justice of the Supreme Court--appointed by President Reagan back when things were good (or at least so memory tells us)? Antonin Scalia is this man. This past summer he con cluded his 20th term on the Court, a milestone reached by only 36 of our 109 justices. Among current justices, only John Paul Stevens, appointed in 1975, has served longer. Scalia, 70 and in good health, may well join the handful of justices (including Stevens, 86) whose High Court tenures lasted at least three decades.

Born the only child of Eugene and Catherine Scalia in Trenton, N.J., and raised in New York City, Scalia went to St. Francis Xavier, a military prep school, and then to Georgetown University, where he finished first in his class. At Harvard Law, he was note editor of the school's law review. Graduating magna cum laude in 1960, he worked in a top-tier law firm, taught at the University of Virginia law school, and served in the Ford Justice Department as assistant attorney general in charge of the Office of Legal Counsel, where some of the department's finest lawyers work. After that he spent five years on the faculty of the University of Chicago law school while also editing Regulation magazine.

As the election nears it is good to remember why the Senate is so important.

Me thinks Bush will have the opportunity to name at least one more justice to the court.

Scalia is the second best judge on the SC.

Sorry, doesn't beat Thomas.

But if you are second only to Thomas, you are doing pretty damn good.

There are four outstanding Justices on the Supreme Court, Scalia, Thomas, Roberts and Alito.

As we go into Tuesday, the importance of Judges should be fopremost in the mindsd of people who cast their ballots.

Disenchantment with the war in Iraq is important for some, but it is temporary, the SCOTUS is forever.

The rumors about Justice Stevens' health make you realize even more how important it is to keep Republicans in the Senate. Justice Scalia has been great, but he is 70. The next Justice should be a good strong Conservative in Scalia's mold.

What's "outstanding" about Roberts and Alito?

Outside of the fact that they are members of the Supreme Court, could anybody tell me what is "outstanding" about the performance of Justice Roberts or Justice Alito?

We are hoping. Chief Justice Roberts performance during the Senate confirmation hearing was brilliant and Justice Alito's gentlemanly demeanor during the Senate confirmation hearing manifested why the symbol of the Democratic party is the jackass.

Scalia should be Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Not Roberts. Intellectually he's giant with more experience then Roberts and along with Thomas he's the best friend the Constitution has on the Court !!!

There is much to be said about the logic of appointing the much younger Roberts as CJ.and having Scalia continue on as Associate. I am a huge fan of Scalia, but agree with the decision.
