GOP Calls for Dem Opponents to Distance Selves From Kerry Comments

WASHINGTON — Republicans are trying a seemingly successful technique found in Democratic campaign playbooks, linking their opponent to an objectionable gaffe much the way Democrats have pinned Republican candidates to politically unpopular President Bush.

That appears to be the game plan as the GOP seeks to make John Kerry a last-minute issue before next Tuesday's midterm election by demanding to know whether their Democratic opponents support the Massachusetts senator's recent criticism of U.S. troops in Iraq.

"Sen. Cantwell is Sen. Kerry's host in our state," reads a press release from Mike McGavick, Washington Sen. Maria Cantwell's Republican opponent. "She has evaded comment time and time again in this campaign. Not this time. Sen. Cantwell owes Washington's veterans and soldiers an explanation. She has taken Sen. Kerry's money. Does she also accept his comments?"

Joe Sestak has closely allied himself with John Kerry throughout this campaign,” Mike Puppio, chairman of Pennsylvania GOP Rep. Curt Weldon’s re-election campaign, said of the retired admiral who is ahead of Weldon in the polls.

“The question now is whether Sestak will publicly condemn the insensitive and wildly off base comments by Kerry that belittle and denigrate our men and women in the military. ... Joe Sestak should call on his friend John Kerry to apologize,” Puppio said.

The Press will do its best to ignore and hide Kerry's slander of our military.

The reason is simple--it's because the MSM AGREES WITH HIM!!!!

Everyone who was planning to Freep a scheduled Kerry appearance for Wednesday should show up in full Freep mode.

The fact that Kerry (who served in Vietnam, by the way) cancelled his appearances gives this story legs - meaning there will be local news out there to cover the "lack of a story."

GIVE THEM A STORY!!! Let the press know you DID NOT FORGET that JOHN F'N KERRY was supposed to BE HERE on Wednesday and that a local Dim candidate was the ONE TO INVITE HIM, and then question whether that Dim thinks our troops are a bunch of non-educated fools, as the candidate's SCHEDULED GUEST thinks they are.

Kerry says he botched a joke.
I say he accidentally revealed his true feelings, and the true feelings of many dems.

I say Kerry intentionally revealed his true feelings and miscalculated, brain-farted, and overlooked the negative response to his snobbish comment.

For those thinking that this was a gaffe, remember not so long ago the despicable story of on Rene Gonzalez, a student at UMASS, who disparaged the death of Pat Tillman?

Wrote Mr. Gonzalez in the Dailiy Collegian in response to people thinking that Tillman was a hero:

"However, in my neighborhood in Puerto Rico, Tillman would have been called a “pendejo,” an idiot. Tillman, in the absurd belief that he was defending or serving his all-powerful country from a seventh-rate, Third World nation devastated by the previous conflicts it had endured, decided to give up a comfortable life to place himself in a combat situation that cost him his life. This was not “Ramon or Tyrone,” who joined the military out of financial necessity, or to have a chance at education. This was a “G.I. Joe” guy who got what was coming to him. That was not heroism, it was prophetic idiocy.

Tillman, probably acting out his nationalist-patriotic fantasies forged in years of exposure to Clint Eastwood and Rambo movies, decided to insert himself into a conflict he didn’t need to insert himself into. It wasn’t like he was defending the East coast from an invasion of a foreign power. THAT would have been heroic and laudable. What he did was make himself useful to a foreign invading army, and he paid for it. It’s hard to say I have any sympathy for his death because I don’t feel like his “service” was necessary. He wasn’t defending me, nor was he defending the Afghani people. He was acting out his macho, patriotic crap and I guess someone with a bigger gun did him in."

This is what they teach in Massachusetts colleges, and, no doubt, in most other ultraliberal college campuses.

What Kerry said was no different. Kerry was simply spouting conventional liberal "wisdom," that soldiers are "idiots" or "uneducated."

Kerry, like Gonzalez, should be run out of town on a rail. Throw in some tar and feathers, as well as a swift kick in the ass.

I agree. That was not an accident. His true feelings came through LOUD AND CLEAR.

Why is this surprising? Heck, he's been saying virtually the same thing about our military since his Vietnam days--over 30 years now.

Nothing 'botched' here. Nothing 'botched' at all.

His tortured and pathetic explanation was even more transparent, phoney, patronizing and insulting than his original slander of our military.

"The GOP should just SHUT UP......and let this thing take its own course."

Maybe the GOP should, but every pubbie in every race ought to ask their opponent to take a stand on it.

Claire McCaskill, do you think that John Kerry should apologize to our military? Even if it was a "botched joke", doesn't he owe them an apology?

linking their opponent to an objectionable gaffe much the way Democrats have pinned Republican candidates to politically unpopular President Bush.

The thing is, the more Bush stands up for the Military, the less "unpopular" he becomes.

Great strategy dems. Link your opponents to the most popular elected official in the nation, while linking your own fortunes to a tin-eared, self-obsessed Chernobyl man.

The GOP should just SHUT UP......and let this thing take its own course.

The ONLY REASON the GOP is IN any kind of mess is that they ALWAYS let these things "take their own course". The FOLEY thing "took its own course". The VALERIE PLAME kerfuffel "took its own course". ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION "took its own course". STEM CELL RESEARCH "took its own course".

Letting this "take its own course" means allowing JAMES CARVILLE and HOWARD DEAN to set the agenda. NUH UH. Not this time. Not this issue. The dems are DEAD on this issue, if the Republicans give it even a little effort. They're holding a sharp stake right over Vlad The Impaler's heart in one hand and an 8 pound sledgehammer in the other. There's not ONE GOOD REASON to refrain from taking a swing.

I can't believe that J F'in K helped save the day...FOR US!
Him being a flip-flopping traitorous bastard in '04 was gift enough.
And now a second election where his ineptitude and total lack of any gravitas come forefront with 7 days remaining until election day.
I can't imagine what Karl Rove thought the first time he heard /saw Jenjis John jump the shark again.
I would have paid money to see the look on his face as he muttered "Lurch, You magnificent bastard!", and smiled :)
Just like I am now. Broken glass baby, broken glass.

It may take the GOP and ourselves to keep this thing alive. I do not believe that the MSM will keep the story going. Rush and the like will only be preaching to the choir.
