Movie Reviews: 'Death of a President' (what leftists have to say about the movie)
imdb ^ | oct 27, 2006

Writing about Death of a President, critics are compelled to focus their attention on a scene in the film in which an actor, playing the role of the president of the United States, is assassinated in Chicago in 2007. The actor's face has been digitally replaced by George W. Bush's. "As a medium-left liberal with a fierce belief in free speech and artistic expression, I'm proud to live in a country where the government can't prevent the release of a fictional film depicting the assassination of the real-life president," Richard Roeper writes in the Chicago Sun-Times. "That said, I find the idea repugnant and morally objectionable." But his cross-town colleague, Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune begins his review with the words, "It is not irresponsible." Lisa Kennedy in the Denver Post calls the controversial scene "a crude stunt." Carrie Rickey in the Philadelphia Inquirer expresses ambivalence about it. "Sure, movies are protected speech. But is this exploration or exploitation?" she asks. However, if the actual face of the actor were shown, she concedes, the film might not have "scored the same points." Indeed, Kyle Smith writes in the New York Post, "If this movie were about the murder of a fictional president, it wouldn't even earn a theatrical release." On the other hand, Gene Seymour in Newsday calls the controversial scene "more a crafty technical exercise than an incendiary device." Michael Sragow in the Baltimore Sun, who describes the film as "excitingly well-made," also defends it as "a responsible piece of political fiction." And Carina Chocano in the Los Angeles Times writes, "Somewhere within this smoldering heap of controversy is a technically inventive, thoughtful, but otherwise not particularly earth-shattering movie."

This movie opens this week for limited screens. I think this is a risky move on leftists part, because it may ignite a blacklash from independent-mind voters as this movie provides a window of what is in leftists' mind.

LOL! Do yourself a favor...NEVER READ WHAT PEOPLE HAVE TO SAY about politics on IMDB.com. It's maddening and frightening. It's easy to just assume these are just kids posting, but I fear alot of them are not.

Yes, I agree with you .. and the risky move is that people will see that the leftist's SOLUTION for their political problem is DEATH TO THE OTHER GUY. Not very democratic if you ask me.

I'm a little surprised the reviews didn't call it "The Best movie in Years," and the reviewers aren't calling for Oscars all around.

I participated in a discussion about "Flightplan" on imdb - there were a lot of Islamo defenders. One conservative Hollywood writer participated, and was based regularly. It just frustrates me.

Suppose this had been a fictional film where the KKK assassinated all their "undesirables"? Would he be proud of the country?

Forget posting any right leaning ideas on IMDB. You will be viciously attacked, personally. I regularly go to IMDB for entertainment information, and yes, I do read the reviews....once in awhile there is an articulate one. But as far as the boards...FORGET IT. I was on a board for the show "IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA" which I couldn't stand...I don't even know if it's on anymore. I just found it vulgar. I stated why I found the show offensive and the writer himself wrote me back and insulted me! I told him maybe if he wasn't so insecure, he could write a better show! It was pretty funny.

It wouldn't be allowed to air. Hate speech.

For what it's worth, the TomatoMeter at www.rottentomatoes.com gives this movie a 33%.

I am sorry the movie has not been more widely panned and shown.

It would so enrage the Republican base that turn out would approach 100% on Nov. 8.

Meanwhile I spit on the shadows of these poor excuses for patriots and citizens so called, and long for the day when a cold finger touches them gently on the back of the neck.

I post on IMDB occasionally. If you post on this one the other authors themselves are probably the only people who have seen this one: it is totally bombing in theaters.

I agree, I thought they would be saying that it was a bold concept in these controversial times.

It's not playing in many theaters though. In fact, I didn't even think it was officially released yet. I could be wrong.

An article posted here said it's playing in 91 theaters with an average take of a whole $675 per showing.

Kinda tricky thing that whole hate speech/free speech thing. What's it to be? Nothing is forbidden, or the "I know it when I see it"?
