Somewhere along the road to a "permanent majority," the Republican Revolution of 1994 went off track. For several years, we had confidence in our convictions and trusted that the American people would reward our efforts. And they did.
But today, my Republican friends in Congress stand on the precipice of an electoral rout. Even the best-case scenarios suggest wafer-thin majorities and a legislative agenda in disarray. With eight days before the election, House speaker-in-waiting Nancy Pelosi has already begun her transition planning.
Where did the revolution go astray?

Good move... DICK
Gee, Dick, you don't think it had anything at all to do with the constant negative drumbeat of the enemy "news" media, do you?
.
Great article and ever so true. The current leadership in the Republican Party is a big disappointment. Now we will reap what we sowed. God help us!
BUMP!
Did you actually read the article? Here's another quote "If Democrats take control of Congress on Nov. 7, they will form an accidental majority. They are not succeeding because of their principles or policy proposals, but simply because they have kept their heads down. Republicans, fearful of taking on big tasks and challenges, may be defeated next month by a party that offers nothing on the key issues of our day."
Power corrupts and many Republicans have fallen under its sway. They are too busy building their net worth through nefarious means to notice that they have abandoned their constituents. I have no sympathy for them, they deserve whatever they may get.
But, the alternative is far worse. I cannot imagine the harm that will be done by a Democrat party that has become far more radical and leftist in the past 12 years. They are Communist in all but name and they will preside over the ruination of this country should we let them.
I am concerned that if the Republicans, through our hard work, manage to dodge a bullet and retain power, they will forget the message and return to their evil ways. But, we must take the risk. The consequences of the alternative are too horrible to contemplate.

The enemy news media has always been there and will continue to be there. That is just an excuse. We have a much stronger alternative media voice now than we did in 1994 or the Reagan years. It is time to stop making excuses and start looking in the mirror.
"I am concerned that if the Republicans, through our hard work, manage to dodge a bullet and retain power, they will forget the message and return to their evil ways. But, we must take the risk. The consequences of the alternative are too horrible to contemplate."
Unfortunately you are most likely right.
Sometimes in life you have to choose between less than ideal alternatives. It takes no effort for me to descern that the lesser of the two evils is to vote for the Repubs. That said, if we somehow manage to dodge the bullet and stay in control, then changes have to be made - changes in agenda, policy and personnel.
One of the best, most accurate, most succinct summations of the dynamics on Capitol Hill that I have ever seen.
What went wrong? We lost Newt.
Sad to say, but Newt took himself out of the game with his own behavior. That we didn't find a suitable replacement is our fault.
Unfortunately, if the GOP is routed in the upcoming election, the wrong lesson will be learned. Expect the punditocracy to proclaim that Republican voters are tired of being led by the party's conservative wing, and that it's time to turn to more moderate leaders such as McCain.
Yep. Well said.
But then, perhaps the Washington Post would not have been so interested in this article AFTER the election. The Post could then get it from Krauthammer or Novak or any number of other more popular pundits who are more sensitive to the timing of their words.
Apparently Mr. Armey believes what he sees on TV and reads in papers.
He's right about this: instead of voting for people who advance the Conservative Agenda we want, voting in this election is now a lesser-of-two-evils choice. We should be angry about it, but the Democrats in charge of anything is enough to get me to my polling station.
We need real conservatives to run for office.
