A Paul Revere for today: Pat Boone quotes James Dobson's clarion call for believers to vote

They say "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."

May I propose a corollary adage? "Quotation is the sincerest form of respect."

And because I feel the content is so vitally important, and because I couldn't possibly say it better or more emphatically, I must quote James Dobson in this space, here and now, and at length.

What we call a "midterm election" is upon us, and though many are sounding alarms about the importance of these local and state elections, too many eligible voters will likely sit out, stay home and decline to take part. The result may be far more tragic than we can accurately predict.

(Column continues below)

But Dr. James Dobson, founder and chairman of Focus on the Family, like a modern Paul Revere, has mounted up and is proclaiming for all to hear, "America, our values and our very survival are hanging precariously in the balance! The security of our homeland and the welfare of our children are under grave threat! TO THE POLLS!"

Alarmist? Off the wall? Chicken Little under benign skies?

I don't think so.

In the latest newsletter to millions of attentive citizens across our country, he does something he's never done before: He details some of the drastic statistics about the small percentage but still frighteningly large numbers of Islamic extremists – likely 12 million men, women and children – who will, if given the chance, bomb our homeland or happily blow up themselves or their children on suicide missions. As he says, "This is a threat of enormous proportions."

And to illustrate partially, he reminds us of just some recent examples of what these extremists do:

They pulled four unarmed American civilians out of a Humvee, murdered them savagely and mutilated their bodies beyond recognition.

They tried to bomb 10 commercial jetliners simultaneously and murder thousands of innocent men, women and children. A Muslim couple was apprehended in London this past summer in this effort. According to reports, they had planned to sacrifice their 6-month-old son, Zain, using his baby bottle as a liquid bomb!

They ruthlessly beheaded American journalist Daniel Pearl, on film, just to make sure we know how serious they are.

A spokesman for al-Qaida last month said that Muslims around the world are calling for the murder of Pope Benedict XVI, referring to him as "the worshipper of the cross," and saying, "You and the West are doomed." The extremists went on to murder a Catholic nun as she was leaving a Somali hospital. She actually forgave her attackers as she lay dying on the pavement. Is it "alarmist" to state (and document) these facts? Or is it an alarm that must be sounded? And does our imminent "midterm" election have anything to do with this alarm? Listen again to Dr. Dobson:

Given these ominous developments (including nuclear escalation in enemy nations) on the world scene, I would ask you two critically important questions: 1. Would you favor turning the leadership of this nation over to those who believe we can negotiate with extremists and talk them into being "nice"? And can we avoid a showdown simply by packing up and running away? Weakness and groveling only create contempt and greater determination among those whose intentions are dishonorable. Yet there are politicians on our ballots this November who have no plan for national defense other than "talk." They are naïve, foolish and dangerous.

2. Can you afford to stay at home on Election Day and leave the future of our country in the hands of those who would sell us out?

I beg you to pray about these decisions and to present yourself at the polls on November 7th. It will take you only 15 minutes to indicate your preferences, and the future of our nation may depend on that participation. Yet approximately 21 million evangelical Christians did not bother to vote in 2004!

Dobson quotes columnist Mark Steyn: "A free society is a tough thing to hold onto. It's an aberration in human history. If you want to keep it, you want to fight for it – or you're going to wind up in a terribly appalling state."

This is only a part of James Dobson's newsletter, an alarm call in the night for duty and responsibility on the part of family-oriented citizens. Additionally, he offers suggestions on how to decide who should get our votes:

If you can find a politician who understands the institution of the family and will work to preserve it;

If you can find one who cares about children and will work to protect them from those who would hurt them and teach them immorality and expose them to filth;

If you find one who understands we are at war with those who seek to destroy us utterly, and is determined to defend us from them;

If you can find one who wants to eliminate waste in the federal government and let the people keep more of their own money to invest and spend on their own families;

If you can find a politician who believes liberal judges are undermining this country and need to be reined in;

If you can find one who has read the U.S. Constitution and is determined to protect and defend, not rewrite, it;

And if you can find a politician who lives by a strong moral code and is committed to the God of the universe. If you can find such a person on your ballot, I urge you to go to the polls and vote for him or her on November 7th. YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU!"

Since I subscribe to every word, and couldn't say it better; and since I, too, want to implore every serious American to think, pray and vote most seriously in the coming election, I also urge you to go to the Focus on the Family website or call 800-A-FAMILY and get more of the facts and counsel about candidates we can really trust to represent our national interests.

As surely as we needed the midnight ride of Paul Revere, alerting tentatively free Americans of the impending threat, we desperately need the clear and informed warnings of patriots like James Dobson. Truly, your future and mine and that of our children – always and ever a tentative thing – hangs in the balance.

May God help us.

If I may add another notable Christian to this premise, I was surfing the channels early Friday morning and happened upon John Hagee and his guest, Walid Shoebat, a former Islamic terrorist converted to Christianity. I bring it up because he had a lot to say about the intent of Islam.

First, he said 73% of muslims follow the terrorist thinking and they live amoung us. That is a most alarming statistic.

Secondly, He brought up a discussion of Peace Treaties between Islam and Israel or the US or any non-terrioist entity. As we at least know in the back of our minds, these treaties are less than worthless. Yes, truly LESS than worthless. We call them Peace Treaties. The Muslims have a different word for them. I'm not certain of the spelling but it is pronounced Huda. Huda means to lie to advance the cause of a world of Muslims and NO others. It is not just OK to lie. It is expected and considered one of the best tools to effect their end. So they will sign peace treaty after peace treaty with the objective being to lie about peace. They have no intention of holding to the treaty that they sign. It means nothing about peace to them.

It was a half hour program and there was much more said but having very little short term memory, that is all I can bring here. But I had never heard a number of militant vs non militant muslim(e)s (if there is such a thing). And I had not heard that they actually define peace treaty as a huda, or lie. There is so much more I don't know about them but I do know they are our # 1 enemy and we had better admit it and stop pretending they are a/the ROP.
