AUSTRALIA'S leading Muslim cleric, Sheik Taj al-Din al-Hilaly, says he will only resign when the world is "clean of the White House". After emerging from Friday prayers at Lakemba Mosque today, Sheik Hilaly was asked by a media pack whether he would quit over a speech in which he said scantily-dressed women invited rape. "After we clean the world of the White House first," the sheik said. Supporters of the sheik cheered and applauded loudly at the comments, which were directed firmly at US President George W Bush.

I certainly don't like to predict this but someday there will be violence breaking out neighborhood by neighborhood around the world instigated by Islamcists of the more radical order. And while I may be too much of an optimist I truly believe that at that point most of the libs among us will understand that when it comes to women's rights, freedom of speech, etc. that we actually believe in those values and we will join together, left and right, to protect ourselves.

And in such an environment where we need to get along to survive we will start to break down our partisan rhetoric and come to honest agreements (and disagreements) but with a stronger, more durable framework that highlights the fact that when we talk face-to-face we tend to find our best way to calmy frame our arguments and actual start highlighting our similarities and downplaying our differences.
