A Republican congressional candidate whose campaign was linked to an intimidating letter sent to Hispanic voters said Tuesday he would not quit the race if he is charged with a crime.
The state Department of Justice has opened a voting rights investigation into the letter sent to certain Democratic voters in Orange County.
The letter, written in Spanish, warned: "You are advised that if your residence in this country is illegal or you are an immigrant, voting in a federal election is a crime that could result in jail time."
William Braniff, Nguyen's campaign attorney, said a volunteer drafted an English version of the letter and e-mailed it to a volunteer who translated it into Spanish. The office manager forwarded the database of Hispanic voters to a volunteer, said Braniff, who declined to give the name of the office manager.
Nguyen called for an investigation into what sparked the criminal probe.
Nathan Barankin, spokesman for the state Department of Justice, said the letters alone triggered it.
"What prompted the probe was hundreds of letters arriving in the mailboxes of registered voters a couple weeks ago," he said.
Sanchez's (DEM incumbent) campaign has said it will not comment until the investigation is complete

Why is the Republican party willing to toss this candidate for congress out the window, during a time when they are in risk if loosing the house? This is a debacle!
First we are told that in CA there is no such thing as an illegal immigrant by all levels of our government, though their failed actions to enforce any laws, so when words are translated to Spanish and then back to English , in context in a letter that urged legal registered voters to vote and warned those who resided illegally not to vote, every one jumps on the voter intimidation accusation bandwagon, is this any surprise,,, no not in these times...
But is is a shame to the state of the integrity of our democratic process, where we can allow forging powers to swamp our elections, dilute our votes, and then be investigated for hate crimes if we speak out.

According to reports I read the letter was improperly translated. It said "illegal immigrants and aliens". They conveniently left that part out.
Why should he? Clinton didn't.
The only investigation this should "spark" is one into why the Justice Department is spending even one penny of the taxpayers' money on this crap.

There is no crime to free speech stating US law,
Thousands of Spanish speaking foreign born registered voters were reminded in a letter that it is against the law to vote if they resided here illegally .
This district (including Santa Ana CA) has a very high probably of a person speaking Spanish they are more than likely illegal, AND if they are registered to vote that does not clear them from being suspect as being an illegal immigrant because This district has a history of illegal being registered to vote in the past, and local media has boasted that they were registering illegal immigrants to vote in this particular elections by the thousands
So bottom line there was no crime committed by the person who sent these letters out as a realistic reaction to what is happening in this district regrading the flaunting of US law.
Furthermore Tann claims a supporter of his sent the letters without any knowledge and that one word may have not been translated properly by the press regarding immigrant, which really in context the warning was directed to illegal immigrants, so even if he did authorize these letters, they speak the truth, it is a US Federal crime to fill out a voter registration Nada vote if a person is not a citizen of the US and there has been no crime committed.

They conveniently left that part out.Mr. Tan's attorney tried to sell that story, but, alas... a lot of people in Los Angeles (and elsewhere) can read Spanish. The attorney tried to claim "emigrado" meant "emigrado ilegal"... which it doesn't. Mr. Tan's letter said "ANY immigrant who votes could go to jail." And, intentional or not, that is voter supression.
He's not the only political candidate to have shot himself in the foot this year. It seems to be a pattern lately. What's bizarre are the ways people try to "spin" these gaffes... and unfortunately, some of us fall for the spin.
This is what happens when RINOs are left at the helm of the RNC. They always cave to the Dhimmicrats, no matter what.
There is some debate if the letter meant legal immigrant or illegal immigrant in one of the sentences, but there is no debate in context the letter encouraged legal voters to participate, and that if somebody was here illegally they could not vote.
The mix up occurred when the press with an agenda translated from Spanish to English , some people have mixed up the phrase immigrants and illegal immigrant, but that is no surprises , since most of the activists and open border people refuse to acknowledge that the phrase illegal immigrant even exists, and in Spanish, the slang in this part of CA between illegal and legal , green card holder and citizen and immigrant is very loose.
There is no mistake what the state of CA believes the translation to be, at tax payer expense they are sending a new letter to the same people telling them to disregard the voter intimidation letter.
You know what is intimidating as a legal voter? Our own officials who will not enforce US law, who allow our votes to be diluted by foreign nationals, and who sabotage the right of a US citizen to run for office, by charging them with bogus crimes, and seizing their election assets weeks before an election.
