For my money, the single most over-hyped bit of entertainment this year is the British What-if-umentary Death of a President. Already defamed as a shocking, hateful film by right wing blogs and celebrities alike, this is rapidly becoming one of those buzz films it’s hard to not to hear about. And being a political junkie myself, when I heard it was getting its US premier here in Austin, I knew that I just had to see it right then and there.
Now as I waited in line for the film, the crowd was buzzing about it. Normally I try to avoid talking about details like this in my reviews, but here it’s almost required. Because what I heard really set the tone for the night. I would need a couple extra hands to tally up the number of times I heard the phrase “Of course I came, I can’t wait to see Bush get shot.” Now Austin is an extremely liberal city. Hell, we’re known as the loophole in the Bible Belt. But this was almost absurd. People were lining up to watch the President get shot. Now, I’m certain that this wasn’t the entirety, if even the bulk, of the audience; but it certainly was out of the ordinary.
