KIEV, October 14 (Itar-Tass) -- Ukrainian Communist Party leader Pyotr Simonenko said his party would block a draft law giving former members of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) the status of 1941-1945 Great Patriotic War if President Viktor Yushchenko signed it.
The presidential decree will have no force if the Supreme Rada has not passed relevant laws, Simonenko said on Saturday at a rally of protest against a nationalist march in the centre of Kiev on the occasion of the 64th anniversary of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.
We will find supporters in the parliament, sons and grandsons of the generation of victors, who will not allow the memory of their fathers and grandfathers to be defamed. We are confident that common sense will prevail, he said.
He said the decree on the rehabilitation of UPA veterans, which the presidential administration is preparing, was shameful.
We must condemn such shameful chapters in our history and not allow those who committed crimes during the Great Patriotic War to march along Kreshchatik and organise their events in Ukrainian cities, Simonenko said.
Earlier in the day, Yushchenko congratulated members of the Ukrainian liberation movement in connection with the 64th anniversary of the rebel army.
In his greeting address, Yushchenko said that tens of thousands of participants of the national liberation movement during World War II accomplished heroic feats defending the independence of Ukraine. Among them were members of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, who went to fight with slogans Freedom or Death and gave their life for the motherland.
Yushchenko said the army's glory had gone down in history and would remain in people's memory. He wished UPA veterans good health and a happy long life.
Meanwhile, up to 5,000 representatives of the Communist Party, Progressive Socialists, and the Russian Community of Ukraine blocked Kiev's main street, thus preventing UPA supporters and veterans from marching.
The Russian Community's leader Konstantin Shurov told Itar-Tass that the fascist toadies would not be let go along Kreshchatik.
Special police units blocked the city's entire central part. Police are trying to prevent clashes. Such clashes took place in Ukraine last year.
UPA bump
For later.
The Ukrainian Insurgent Army fought the communists after World War II. They were largely eliminated by Soviet MVD troops. Their leaders were assasinated by Soviet hit-men.
It is typical of the Russians still to be approving of the old Soviet system, one of the most evil in the history of the world.
I keep telling you: Never, never, never trust the Russians.
Look how they even conspire with China to block any action on the North Korean acquisition of nuclear weapons. They still prefer Kim Jung Il to a free Korea, and they never wish to see a free unified Korea. All this talk about "stability" is a cover for propping up The Kim regime in Pyongyang.
Never, never, never trust the Russians.
Looks like the communists still want to fight their enemies even when they have been put on the asheap of history.
Are we going to be next?
Agreed
