GOP leaders seek probe of Berger papers

A group of House Republicans called Wednesday for a congressional investigation into the improper handling of classified documents by President Clinton's national security adviser, Sandy Berger.

Berger admitted last year that he deliberately took classified documents out of the National Archives in 2003 and destroyed some of them at his office. He pleaded guilty in federal court to one charge of unauthorized removal and retention of classified material and was fined $50,000.

Ten lawmakers led by House Armed Services Chairman Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., and Judiciary Chairman James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., released a letter calling for the House Government Reform Committee to investigate.

They asked the committee to determine whether any documents were missing from Clinton administration terrorism records, to review security measures for classified documents and to seek testimony from Berger.

Hunter's spokesman, Joe Kasper, said the Justice Department had asked Congress to hold off on any oversight until the legal case concluded.

I wonder if this has anything to do with Billy Jeffs explosive outburst during the Wallace interview. The truth has ways of coming to the surface, just like Mary Jo.

What corpse was so vile, that BJ sent the sloppy scissor shredder to do the dirty work?

Why did WJC blurt out about someone accusing him of "giving aid and comfort to OBL in Somalia"?

Something stinks besides Hillarys shields!

I hate to be cynical but what is the point of doing this investigation three years after the actual incident and after this has gone through the court? This is some pretty transparent and poorly executed election year gamesmanship. There are a number of more important issues they could be working on.

I think the republicans were willing to look the other way on Sandy...but then the Dems, where Dems...and it's time to call the party of crooks and ratfinks (the Democrats) to the carpet.

The fact that the Republicans were willing to look the other way on such an important matter makes me think it's time to get rid of all of them. Now the Dem's will just say this is vengeance for Mark Foley.

Hunter's spokesman, Joe Kasper, said the Justice Department had asked Congress to hold off on any oversight until the legal case concluded.

I'd say the legal case was concluded about three years ago when Berger walked out with a $50,000 fine instead of going to trial on a felony count.

No, they can't say that because John Ashcroft just revealed on Bill O'Reilly that the docments he was hiding in his pants is the infamous "anti-terrorism" plan that Bill Clinton claimed he left for the Bush administration.

Good point, but let's not hang "all" republicans.

There is probably a lot of executive favors going around Washington...could be Sandy's act wasnt that severe, so, nothing was done to him.

Now, all bets are off.

I think this probe should be focused on the same part of his anatomy where the papers were hidden...

Perhaps you're incurious about the incident, but I know a lot of people who are wondering WHY Sandy Berger stole secret documents pertaining to the Clinton administration's terrorism policies from government archives (stuffed into his pants and socks) and admitted destroying some of them, returning others (are they the originals?) and all for no apparent benefit to himself.

Only a fool would believe that he would do this for some petty reason which WOULDN'T be of national interest.
