NASSAU, Bahamas (Reuters) - A man convicted of trying to rape an 83-year-old woman was sentenced to eight lashes with a cat-o'-nine-tails, a punishment used by the British Navy in the 18th century and reinstated in the Bahamas 15 years ago. Click to learn more...
Altulus Newbold, 34, was sentenced on Friday to 16 years in prison after being found guilty of burglary, attempted rape and causing harm. Justice Jon Isaacs ordered that he receive four lashes of the whip at the start of his sentence and four upon his release, but suspended the punishment for three weeks pending a possible appeal.
The cat, a whip made of knotted cords, leaves flesh wounds and is used on the offender's back by a prison guard. It was outlawed in the Bahamas many years ago, but reinstated in the former British colony in 1991 in the face of rising crime.

I just hope the guy isn't a masochist, he'd probably enjoy it.
He needs a kick in the groin to reinforce the learning experience.
Seems to me that 83 lashes would be more appropriate.
Ought to be 83 lashes. Followed by amputation to prevent recidivism.
Great minds think alike :-)
Are you on board with Part 2 of my suggested punishment?
"Bailiff, whack his pee pee!"
I think life is physical. I think many people need a physical reminder.
I think physical punishment would make a lot of people mend their ways and not repeat some of their crimes.
It's also much cheaper and probably more effective than jail or prison time for some people.
Of course the "liberals" and ACLU (American Communist Liberties Union) would be all hysterical and up in arms.
Need to bring back the Maiden.
LOL! I like this old lady!
add two more 00's to the number of lashes he deserves.
Some guys pay cash to have that done to them.
Technically, he's getting 72 lashes, so you're actually darned close.
This is a shining example of how to deter crime. Only it needs to applied, not suspended.
A long-serving prison governor told me that prisoners who received the cat never returned to prison. He considered it the ultimate deterrent," Thompson said.
Need to bring this back, here. A day or two in the stocks or a dozen lashes.
When a problem comes along you must whip it, whip it whip it good. (DEVO)

Sounds like a great idea to me.
