MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's Teotihuacan, once the center of a sprawling pre-Hispanic empire, is set to become the launch pad for an attempt to communicate with extraterrestrial life.
Starting on Tuesday, enthusiasts from around the world will have a chance to submit text, images, video and sounds that reflect human nature to be included in the message.
Those contributions -- part of media company Yahoo's "Time Capsule" project -- will be digitalized and beamed with a laser into space on October 25 from the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan, now an archeological site near Mexico City.
Archeologists say a culture centered in Teotihuacan, known as the City of the Gods, dominated Mesoamerica for hundreds of years during the first millennium. It is unclear what led to the society's collapse.

Maybe it colapsed because they were stupid enought to invite extra-terrestials to come visit.
Why do we assume because they are not from here they will be peaceful ?

We have three extremes of ET's in the movies. The original ET, small, peaceful and not very threatening. The other extreme, from War of the Worlds and Independence Day, we have destructive, conquering types. In the middle extreme, we have the My Favorite Martian, Vulcan and Mork and Mindy types. It would be my guess that any extra-terrestrial civilization out there would be colonizing other planets and sending out "pioneers" to achieve that objective. We would be the "Indians" and they would be the "Conquistadors". It would be best not to advertise our position and save them tons of effort in finding a habitable planet to take over next. Just wait and be ready for anything that shows up as an unexpected "guest"............

Aliens welcome, but please bring your passports or we'll have to deport you.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could imagine aliens that were neither bi-pedal with a few bumps on their otherwise human heads, blobs that look like Hillary's gellatinous thighs, or murderous spiders?

I think any alien civilization that can achieve space travel, will probably be bi-pedal and have hands with opposable thumbs. It must have some way of eating and breathing, of course, be it like ours or osmosis based. A brain that has billions of neural pathways for storage of the necessary information, is a given.....

Lol! I knew someone was going to say that when the article mentioned the Pyramid of the Sun.
But hey, who knows, maybe the Asgard will get here first?

I think any civilization that can achieve FTL space travel probably doesn't give a crap about us anyway. The only reason they'd ever have any interest in us is if there is something valuable to them on this planet and, frankly, anything that might be valuable to them here is probably more easily accessible in the asteroid belt anyway, since any collected resources mined from asteroids don't have to be boosted out of a planet sized gravity well.
