Russian bombers passed aviation tower unnoticed

The flight tower at Keflavík airport was seemingly unaware of two Russian bombers that flew through Icelandic airspace last Friday.

This is claimed by Hjördís Gudmundsdóttir, press officer of the Icelandic Directorate of Civil Aviation (DCAA), although the Minister for Foreign Affairs has made claims to the contrary. RÚV online reports.

Gudmundsdóttir says that the DCAA only registers aircraft that have their radars on, and this is not always the case with military aircraft.

This was an unusual incident, as Icelandic aviation authorities are usually notified of military rehearsals near the country and other aircraft are then directed elsewhere.

Gudmundsdóttir admits that communications with radar stations have been somewhat lax since the departure of the US military, but says that the Icelandic airspace is just as secure as it was before.

It didn't take long for the Russian's to make their presence known over Iceland's airspace once the US military pulled out last month. Hopefully this will shake Iceland into providing for their own defense.

Perhaps they mean transponders.

Oh, well, Iceland can do very nicely without the US. Is Canada paying attention, by the way?

The Russian Bears have been probing Icelandic airspace for years and will greatly miss the American Interceptors that so warmly greeted them. But as Gudmundsdóttir says, “Icelandic airspace is just as secure as it was before.” Lets go back to sleep.

You wonder why the Russians would bother since we're no longer there.

The only thing stopping the Russians from setting up shop in Iceland is the fact that they are a member of NATO.

They really can't do all that much that would be effective. I doubt they can even afford a few used F-16s. They are are very small country, in terms of population.
