Melodrama Crews Accidentally Filmed Chinese Warships, Clashing with Chinese Navy

[Yonhap News 2006-10-03 16:13]

(Seoul=Yonhap News) Baek Nari = 'Lovers', produced by director Shin Woo-chul and writer Kim Eun-sook, which follows their past productions, 'Lovers of Paris' and 'Lovers of Prague', was being filmed on location in Hainan Island, China, when film crews accidentally filmed new Chinese warships in the background, and films were confiscated, according to belated reports.

According to K-dream(?), the production company, the crews, as well as lead character Kim Jung-eun and Lee suh-jin were filming the pursuit scene over the sea in front of Sheraton Sanya(?) Resorts on Sept. 15, when they filmed warships docked at nearby military security zone. The warships were in the background of their pictures.

They are Russian-made warships which were docked 3 days before at the security zone, and there are the top-of-the-line warships. There are only three of them in China.

There were no problems with film shooting on the water in front of the resorts, but as the shooting continued, Chinese navy became suspicious, came after the crews, and confiscated the film. They proposed the negotiation over the film after going back to the shore.

In the end, the crews who were initially adamantly against turning films over, relented. In the process, the boats which carried film crews and actors had to stand by on the water for nearly an hour.

Chinese navy and production team came back to the resorts and had five-hour marathon negotiation session, but to no avail. After a few days of talks, they decided that the pursuit scene would be refilmed under the supervision of Chinese navy. The refilming was done on Sept. 20.

Lee Ki-joon, the director of K-dream said, "The production team were aware that there is military security zone on the left side of the water in front of the resorts, but they were so occupied with the filming that they failed to realize that the warships seen in the background were filmed. The same scene was filmed under the supervision of Chinese navy."

Kim Jung-eun plays a plastic surgeon, and Lee Suh-jin as a mobster, both of whom fall in love. 'Lovers' will take the airwave on early November at SBS.

It is pretty clear from the context that the warships in question are Sovremany class.

People who live off making inane romantic comedy wanderrf into a fight with Chinese navy, and their prized Sovremany class warships. Who knew that their fates can ever cross like that?

According to the book, Roman Soldiers Don't Wear Wrist Watches. The US 7th Fleet can be seen weighed at anchor through the Arch of Hadrian in a scene from Cleopatra. Yes, that would be two faux pas.

There are only three of them in China.

The fourth was just completed and handed over to the PLAN.

What a coincidence. I just accidentally filmed the new hoodlums that moved into my neighborhood.

Yes, that would be two faux pas.

No, that would have been the tie in between "Cleopatra" and "The Final Countdown 2: Great Ceasar's Ghost!"

Alas, "The Final Countdown" wasn't released until 17 years after "Cleopatra", and the sequel was never made, so it was all for naught in the end.

...faux pas, or "anachronism".....?
and how can a fleet of ships be seen if they have
"weighed" their anchors....? to "weigh an anchor"
means to heave it up, in preparation for the
ship's sailing.... those ships in that cinema
would have been "at anchor" or "anchored"....

I'd like to share an amusing and similar story.

A friend of mine was a big railroad fanatic and he had the opportunity in the early 70s to tour the old Soviet Union railroad system with his railroad club. They spent a couple of weeks just riding the rails around the country.

Of course, they were closely accompanied by and 'Intourist Guide' who was charged with making sure they didn't see or film any thing 'strategic'. While on the tour they stopped near a very large railroad bridge across one of the major rivers. When they asked if they could film the bridge, they were told it was 'strategic' and they could not film it.

A few minutes later, a large freight train approached the bridge. They asked if they could film the train and the 'Intourist Guide' told them it was OK to film the train so they took several minutes of film of the train crossing from one end of the the railroad bridge to the other.
