Let's see....we routed the Taliban and took out Hussein's government. Rumsfeld did his job admirably. The politicians and hacks at the state department, on the other hand, have failed us miserably.

Get real - war includes all elements of national power. Rumsfeld blew off Phase IV (as did Franks), got us into the mess we are in now and you have the gall to blame State? If I remember correctly - Powell was one of the few voices of reason... Zinni warned about the same... Bottom line was that Rumsfeld wanted total OSD control over issues they should have no authority on, no true experience in (since WW II), nor foresight on how actions during major combat operations shape the transition to “peace”.

Since you brought up the subject of who has failed us miserably, I submit that those who blindly support those who brought us to this state are at the top of the list.

I've got years of experience in the ME. The "insurgency" as you like to call it, or the enemy as I prefer, understand us a lot better than most Americans and Europeans understand them. The "lets make friends and negotiate with them" attitude plays directly into their hands. They're masters at manipulating the media and the public at large. They will lie, cheat and murder to get what they want and they will certainly not be appeased by silly little gestures on our part.

As long as Washington continues to underestimate and misunderstand who we are fighting, they will continue to win.

Weasely Clark was promoted by slick willie for keeping quiet on what really went down at WACO.

The retired generals complaining loudest are those who stand to see their cohorts lose the most by the Rumsfeld reformation.

I think the people who have failed us miserably are the politicians and general public with their video game/movie "give me results right now" mentality.

No, it's not state of denial - I, for the most part, quit watching the Communist News Network some years ago. If I want to hear about how great Bubba's admin was and how awful Pres Bush's is, I can turn into any of the other channels or pick up almost any newspaper. At least w FNC, we normally get 2 sides to the issues.

I think you may be the one that's in a State of Denial - it appears you deny anything the Bush Admin or Rummy says or does and, instead, wish to believe the rubbish that Bob Woodware, CNN and the rest of the MSM and DNC have to say.

Nice, lets not talk about how Zinni was spot-on - let's divert to Zinni's associations... You are a Freeper, should I hold you accountable for every opinion expressed on this board? What a cop out!

WE NEED TO VOTE FOR RUMSFELD! PLEASE HELP!

Why? This stupid poll has exactly zero effect on Sec. Rumsfeld, his job or the war.

It's from CNN, accept the fact that it'll be skewed toward anything anti-Bush. Vote opposite, that'll show how laughable the results are and how nothing the poll says can be trusted.

Which is the same as it was at 11:19 when I voted good - and, apparently my vote didn't count as the totals were the same as another FReeper who posted several minutes earlier - imagine that on a CNN poll.

More "brilliance" from Zinni in 2002 when every sane person on the planet suspected Iraq of having WMD stockpiles:
I'm not convinced we need to do this now. I am convinced that we need to deal with Saddam down the road, but I think that the time is difficult because of the conditions in the region and all the other events that are going on. I believe that he can be deterred and is containable at this moment. As a matter of fact, I think the containment can be ratcheted up in a way that is acceptable to everybody.

I do think eventually Saddam has to be dealt with. That could happen in many ways. It could happen that he just withers on the vine, he passes on to the afterlife, something happens within Iraq that changes things, he becomes less powerful, or the inspectors that go in actually accomplish something and eliminate potential weapons of mass destruction -- but I doubt this -- that might be there.

He also seems to like the multilateral approach to things:

In a keynote address striking for its critical assessment of the Bush administration, Zinni stressed the need to get the Israeli-Palestinian peace process back on track, build a broad coalition against Iraq, create trust among allies in the region -- and put Saddam Hussein's threat in perspective.

Are you Arab, Persian? What do you not get about screwing this up in the first place and enabling the situation we are now in? We are at war and I believe we need to win this war - it is a matter of national survival. That said, I prefer not to have to "nuke them until they glow". And please, do not be condescending that somehow I am soft on the efing murderer terrorists. We are pushing ourselves into a position where we either have to capitulate or kill them all. Is that what you really want? Shouldn't we correct what we did wrong? Shouldn't we fire those that got us to this sad state of affairs?

I just now voted for Rummy, and the results said the same...84% poor and 16% good. Not that any of it truly matters but I despise their propaganda (and admire the heck out of Rummy).

However, who knows what the true sentiments are, even by this poll. Not only do we likely have a rigged poll, but we have some FReepers who also vote against Rumsfeld just to "skew the poll so badly it will discredit it".

I'm not sure that works out in that manner. The skewier the better, as far as the propagandists go.

What more can I say other than I have given these issues a lot of thought and have come to a conclusion that Rumsfled is part of the problem, not the solution. Does that make me a bad Republican? Have we come to a point where I must blindly support those who are responsible for adding years to a war that should have been concluded in 2003?

Not at all.

Saddam and the Saddamists and the Terrorists and the al Sadrs have got us here.

And here where we are is in a war.
A real war in which the terrorists themselves are making their announced stand.

We shouldn't fire anyone over here, unless it is people like you and the Dems and the MSM, but we should "fire on their butts" over there. And help the Iraqis who wish to do the same, do it.

Bottom line: Iraq had violated and laughed at all of the UN resolutions for years, the intel agencies of every country that matters thought that they had stockpiles of WMD's, and Iraq was shooting at our planes in the no-fly zones.

Zinni didn't want to go into Iraq, and only talked about how bad the aftermath would be as a tool to keep us from attacking Iraq, and not because he was more prescient about the troubles that would follow beating Saddam's military. Zinni wanted to build coalitions, foster peace processes, etc. Why in the world should we listen to this guy about anything? He's was a status quo General who would rather let a WMD-holding Iraq continue to shoot at our planes in the no-fly zones until we had the world's cooperation in defending ourselves.

You also have "FReepers" who voted to boot Rumsfeld because it is the right thing to do.

Here's the link to the Arab News lovin' on ya boy Zinni that I meant to link to in #29. Realize that your "hero" is on the board of an org. with Wesley Clarke and the leaker McCarthy, uses the term "neocrusade," didn't want to go into Iraq cuz Saddam might just kick the bucket and the situation would heal itself, is loved by Arab News, the media organ of Saudi...
