Cardin rally eyes appeal to blacks [Steele R-MD]
The Washington Times ^ | September 28, 2006 | S.A. Miller

U.S. Sen. Barack Obama joined Maryland's top Democrats yesterday to rally for Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin's run for the U.S. Senate in a display of party unity that also highlighted the state party's lack of black candidates for statewide office.

The most prominent black Democrats among more than 50 elected officials on the outdoor stage at the University of Maryland College Park were Mr. Obama of Illinois and Kweisi Mfume, the former National Association for the Advancement of Colored People president, who lost Maryland's Democratic primary for the Senate to Mr. Cardin.

Mr. Obama, the country's only black senator, dismissed the Republican Senate nominee -- Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele, the first black elected statewide in Maryland -- as "the guy [with] that local news anchor style."

"I bet he does like puppies," Mr. Obama said, referring to Mr. Steele's TV ads. "But that is not what this election is about. The election is about the future. The election is about health care. The election is about education. The election is about getting our troops out of Iraq."

Mr. Mfume delivered his most enthusiastic endorsement yet of Mr. Cardin, saying he will make a "good senator."

But he urged party leaders not to ignore their base in black communities or the lack of black candidates at the top of the Democratic ticket.

"The Democratic ticket of four nominees for statewide office ... still looks like the Democratic ticket for state office in 1956," Mr. Mfume said to cheers from the crowd of about 1,000. "We have a problem. ... We have got to find a way that African Americans and other minorities are represented statewide in office."

I think it cannot escape notice that Barack Obama, the half-black/half-white senator from Illinois, has come to Maryland to endorse the white establishment liberal Ben Cardin over the all-black shake-things-up Michael Steele in the race for Senate. Nevertheless, I think this may turn out to be a mixed bag for Democrats as it very well might lose Cardin some of the white vote. I would be surprised if this affects Steele's black vote which, depending on the polls you believe, has Steele anywhere from 24-33% support, unprecedented support for a Maryland Republican. Mfume's comments in this article are very interesting and practically hang race like an albatross around the neck of the Maryland Democrat party.

I have less than zero respect for Mr. Mfume - not because he is Black - but rather that he is a racist himself - and a liberal one at that...

...and also the father of what, 4 to 5 kids? - all with different women - none of whom he married...

...IMHO until more African Americans can choose to respect and follow better role models like Steele, or Dr. Rice, C. Thomas, etc they will always be confined to being pawns of the "dems"...

We were just discussing this earlier today how he never acknowledges his white mom. I know that must be a smack in the face to her, it would to me. Anyways Mfume is like another Jesse Jackson to me with all those kids.

A half-black man, still it is crazy that they continue to support old Byrd.

Once again Kweisi Mfume offers a very hollow "endorsement" of Cardin. He actually made these comments at the rally in Cardin's presence. So far this is Mfume's only appearance with Cardin since the primary election on September 12.

His white mom is really all he has to thank for his upbringing and the marvelous educational opportunities he was given. His "father" was nothing more than a sperm donor who abandoned him and the mother when he was a tot.

He does, of course, have his sperm donor to thank for the lavish media attention showered upon him. Had his single mom been abandoned by a redneck sperm donor rather than a black Muslim sperm donor, it is possible but unlikely he would've gone to Harvard or taught at the University of Chicago. Most certainly, he wouldn't be getting the same lavish media attention.

Which, I suppose, why the thought of Steele in the Senate scares him so-- he not only would cease to be the only black guy in the Senate-- he might even be exposed for what he is-- a guilty white liberal in a light black skin.

Dear Norman Bates,

LOL. Something tells me that Mr. Mfume wouldn't exactly be heartbroken if Mr. Cardin should be retired after Nov. 7.

I bet Kweisi likes Michael Steele better than he likes Ben milquetoast Cardin.
