True enough. But I think this whole thing ties into the AIDS hysteria in this country.Leftists will have you believe that it's an "equal opportunity" illness but,in practical terms,it's not.
The incidence of AIDS in certain "communities" in this country is a problem, but if a guy refrains from sleeping with guys and from shooting drugs and if a gal refrains from shooting drugs and sleeping with guys who sleep with guys and with guys who shoot drugs, the chances of that guy/gal contracting AIDS is pretty darn close to ZERO.
Any infectious disease specialist or epidemiologist with any sense of honesty will tell you that that's the way it is in the US today.
The shallow puncture to the skin using a precision medical device like this is tiny. Kids would stand a greater chance of infection from a nasty ragged wound sustained on a dirty piece of playground equipment.

I'd guarantee you one thing - unless the teacher had MD or RN associated with their name, if I found out they'd insisted my child participate, if I didn't first whip his arse, I'd sue the $hit out of him, the school, and the state education board. I've told my kids, no one - not anyone ever, is to try to stick them with a needle of any kind under any circumstance without mom or dad's being there unless they are sure the one doing the sticking is a doctor or school nurse.

You are exactly right about HIV....however HIV would not be my greatest concern.
only takes one........
There are many horrible diseases carried by blood that are fairly common and may be in one of those kids. Just because they don't have AIDS does not mean it is not an issue.
Salina is artsy-fartsy/gay enough who knows, there may be a person with AIDS in that class.
I'm diabetic and test my blood daily using entirely sterile on-shot lancets that cost about $5.00/hundred. There's just no legitimate reason at this modest cost for that teacher not to provide each student with his/her own one-shot lancet. The suspension was entirely proper, especially due to the great danger of transmitting serious diseases like AIDS.
