Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright refuted a claim made by President Bush last Monday that the current conflicts in the world are a clash of civilizations, instead calling them a battle of ideas. She believes that one of the battles with this battle is that diplomats are not communicating as clearly as they should be.
She said that diplomacy is no longer the game of chess it is equated to in political science classes.
Rather, Modern diplomacy is more like a game of pool. You hope the ball gets in the right pocket, but it hits a lot of balls on the way there.
She spoke at at the Gerald L. Bernstein Memorial Lecture about her new book, The Mighty and the Almighty: Reflections on America, God and World Affairs, to a sold-out audience of 280. Her book focuses on the connection between religion and U.S. foreign policy.
Albright stressed, I am not a theologian I am a problem solver, a clarification she made upon publishing her book. In order to solve many problems in the world she proposed that the U.S. needs a moral foreign policy.
She described moral foreign policy as a policy that would focus on human and civil rights. Albright is implementing moral foreign policy through her position as chairman of the National Democratic Institute of International Affairs. Through this position, she has been working with people from what she called the extremes of the evangelical right and the bleeding heart liberals.
She has found that both groups, who normally would not communicate, could work together on two common concerns: the genocide in Darfur and human trafficking.
However, in Washington, which Albright referred to as toxic, she said the Democrats and Republicans are not communicating as she remembers they had in the past. She put much of the blame on President Bush, who she mockingly quotes in her book with a chapter titled God Wants Me to Be President. Throughout the book, she comments on Bushs invocations of God and blames him and his administration for their lack of information and understanding of religious groups around the world.
She recommended that current Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice would benefit from having religious leaders on her staff. She feels that this would reduce mishaps due to lack of understanding.
Albright cited that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is an example of why Rice needs to have religious leaders on her staff candidly saying, If Jerusalem were just a matter of real estate it wouldnt be a problem.
The other major foreign policy issue she discussed is the war in Iraq. She called it worse than Vietnam due to its location and timing. She believes that the U.S should not set a date to exit Iraq. This belief is based on her experience with the U.S setting a date to leave Bosnia, which was not met, causing the U.S to lose credibility.
Albright commented that the Bush administrations desire for democracy to exist in the Middle East is an idea she personally values, but added, You cant impose democracy. Its an oxymoron.
She also mentioned her fear that Iran could win in Iraq.
While Albright covered many somber issues she had a sense of humor throughout the lecture and expressed her views on the role of the press in politics and foreign affairs. Albright who begins each day by reading five different newspapers and who was married to a journalist gives the media great respect.
She remarked, I watch Fox to make myself crazy, showing her dedication to getting an unbiased view of the world. However, she said she has trouble reading the rolling news feed at the bottom of the screen and watching CNN mimicking it by attempting to pat her head and rub her stomach.
Albright commented on the presence of the media while she was Secretary of State. She said, You travel with your poison, the press. She discussed how they were dependent on each other since the media relied on her for stories and she relied on them to get the facts and issues to the public, calling it a symbiotic relationship.
Overall her message was that in order to improve U.S foreign policy there needs to be a clear dialogue between all diplomats as well as religious leaders. After all as she said, Armageddon is not a foreign policy.
She managed to do a lot of damage in the time she had with Clinton.
Maddy Not-At-All-Bright merely refuted the idea that she has any intellectual ability at all.
Oh brother! She's so darn stupid she couldn't recognize a civilization if it bit her on her hook nose!
She was trying to break Jimmy Carter's record of screwing up the world in 4 years...

Somebody needs to brush up on their English.
Perhaps FDR should have had religious experts on his staff, too, so that he could understand the Nazi mind and work with them for world harmony. (sarc)
This is a bunch of BS.
"Maddy, you ignorant slut!"
We know, Maddy. .....and now that the 9/11 film has aired, much of the country knows as well.
She needs to read "The Clash of Civilizations" by Samuel Huntington. She is way, way behind the times. Go away Ms. Not-so-Bright
