'Two killed' in Russian sub fire
BBC UK ^ | 9/7/06

A fire has broken out on board a Russian nuclear submarine, killing two sailors, Russian news agencies report.

An unnamed Northern Fleet spokesman was quoted as saying there was no threat of a radiation leak.

The ship's nuclear reactor was shut down and the vessel was being towed to a submarine base in the Barents Sea.

The Northern Fleet has been dogged by a number of accidents. In 2000, the Kursk submarine sank in the Barents Sea killing all 118 people on board.

Fire aboard Russian nuclear sub kills two

Sep 7, 2006 — MOSCOW (Reuters) - A fire broke out aboard a Russian nuclear submarine belonging to the Northern Fleet late on Wednesday, killing two of its crew, Interfax news agency quoted Navy sources as saying on Thursday.

The agency said there was no threat of a radiation leak. Interfax said the submarine was now being towed to the port of Vedyayevo, a base for Russian submarines.

I see Soviet levels of quality control are still alive and well in Russia.

Russia and North Korea. Bad subs and bad rockets. What a pair.

Was there ever quality control or has it always been a race to the finish line?

With the Soviets, it was always about quantity over quality, and since their entire industrial base was essentially the UAW's wet dream, even their best designs were always put together like garbage.

Prayers for the families of these submariners. I served on a submarine and I know how dangerous a fire in a confined space can be (though thankfully I've never had to combat a fully developed fire). Fires are one of the most feared causalities on a submarine. When I was in the Navy we had the standard that if a class A or B fire wasn't combated with fire extinguishers within 15 seconds and if a rapid response fire team didn't reach the fire in 2 minutes (with a pressurized fire hose), the fire would become a fully developed fire. These timings that we used are probably fairly accurate.

Once the fire becomes fully developed visibility in the space will be zero. Any mistakes (such as a valve isolation on a emergency air line or being too slow to don breathing protection) will be fatal. It is also a reality that even a well trained crew will have fatalities during a fire.

The air disappears fast, and the toxins build up fast. The Canadians found that out fast. They were lucky they didn't have more casualties considering that they were on a maiden voyage with a sub they were unfamiliar with. That they didn't is a credit to good training.

Thank you for giving a very interesting explanation of what happens on board a submarine during a fire.

Most important:

Thank you for your

Fire onboard is never a good time. Had a small one in SES once that was quickly isolated. The stench of burned electronics lasted for several hours.

One on boat, we had the 2S switchboard literally explode in AMR2 UL on the midwatch. Reactor scram at...uh...greater than 400 feet. It was the first and only time I've ever seen a 4FZ alarm completely ignored.

It got warm. The coolest spot on board was OPSUL at 128 degrees. After 36 hours on the diesel they decided to bring up a single loop so we could run the LiBr.

If the Russians said two were killed and there is no threat of aradiation leak, then the reality probably is that 20 were killed and 6-eyed fish are popping up in that subs wake as we speak.

Arc fault event?

If this was a 637 class boat (and I'm assuming it is because you mentioned AMR2UL) an arc fault in 2S is really bad news. I could imagine (but I won't say) alot of nasty problems that could result depending on how the 2S was destroyed, whether the arc fault also damaged other breakers, whether the adjacent fire hose was damaged, and the time it would take to determine whether the 6S or DG breakers were deranged gear or not. Oh, and I should also mention that when I stood AMR2UL, I had a seat just aft of the 2S breaker. I would not have been amused if a breaker exploded next to me.
