Fears of 'extreme' TB strain-New drug-resistant infection is 'nightmare' say health experts

Health experts are to hold an emergency meeting in Johannesburg this week, following the discovery of a deadly new strain of tuberculosis.

The strain - known as extreme drug-resistant TB - has horrified World Health Organisation doctors. In one outbreak in South Africa, 52 of 53 patients died within weeks of becoming infected.

'This new strain leaves us facing a nightmare,' said Paul Nunn, coordinator of the WHO's drug-resistance unit. 'It is resistant to nearly every drug in our arsenal. We are now on the threshold of the appearance of a strain of TB that is resistant to every medicine known to science.'

The strain was originally discovered by scientists earlier this year. They looked at cases of multiple drug-resistant TB - which has developed over the past decade in many parts of the world - and discovered that among these a worrying new 'extreme' strain had evolved.

Diseases and infections seem to be the main export from S. Africa and Africa.

On the flip side, they are so deadly the burn themselves out, or at least we can hope they do.

Will the new strains invalidate innoculations?

If not, then it doesn't seem like that great of a threat. Troublesome, but not earth shattering (unless you get it).

In the USA, nobody is inoculated against TB. They are given the TB Tine Test which shows if they have been exposed.

In some countries, they do give an inoculation, which only protects about 50% of the time and leaves a huge, ugly scar on the shoulder of the inoculee.

We have AIDS to thank for this. TB is common in people infected with AIDS and the bodies of AIDS patients are like petri dishes for breeding new, drug-resistant pathogens.

Did you bother to read the article, or do you consider being dead just troublesome?

In one area 53 contracted it, 52 confirmed dead and the 53rd most likely dead by now gives me cause to be very concerned about it spreading to other nations since they don't have anything to stop it.

Not so. As an immigrant I was required to be inoculated and you wouldn't know it was there unless you really looked hard for it.

I stumbled on this. To me, 7,000 cases in the UK is an amazing statistic. These are not the strain mentioned in the article.

"TB is on the increase in the UK. Last year there were around 7,000 cases of TB in Britain. Hundreds died from this disease.

An undetected infectious TB victim will, on average, infect another 10 cases in a year, each of whom could transmit the disease in turn."

Even more troubling was this It is estimated that 1/3 of the world's population is infected

Hmmmm... I live overseas where all are required to get the inoculation as kids, and everyone has the ugly scar. My kids have it too, although not as bad as the older generation...

Will the new strains invalidate innoculations? I was wondering the same thing. I had tb once but it was caught early and I suffered no damage. I have been told that I can't catch it again but when I saw this article it kind of made me curious as to whether I would be susceptible to the new strain.

Statement: "Just think of it as medical diversity"

Response: Further, we all know that "Diversity" is our strength-as this new TB strain so amply demonstrates.

Young Migrants Risk All To Reach US

"QUETZALTENANGO, Guatemala -- Across Central America, growing numbers of impoverished children appear to be setting out for the United States on their own, risking robbery, rape and death as they try to sneak illegally through Mexico and across the U.S. border."

My wife could make decent money as a medical translator - she is fluent in English and in several Mexican dialects and has a medical background - but there is no way in hell I want her exposed to some of the crap that is going to be in hospitals soon because we are not controlling immigration. Above and beyond the economic and national security interests of controlling the borders, it will soon become a national health issue - we need to have control of our borders so we can give health screenings for those we admit legally to this country and try to keep some of these problems out.

A sane nation would defend it's borders. After years of not seeing it done, I must admit there is a 'higher' reason being played out.

No problem. We need only make sure that those entering our country have a negative TB test.

Oh...those entering our country just walk in illegally.

Well, maybe we do have a problem.
