Dayton: FAA, NORAD hid 9/11 failures
Star Tribune Washington Bureau Correspondent ^ | July31/04 | Greg Gordon

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sen. Mark Dayton, D-Minn., charged on July 31 that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) have covered up "catastrophic failures" that left the nation vulnerable during the Sept. 11 hijackings.

"For almost three years now, NORAD officials and FAA officials have been able to hide their critical failures that left this country defenseless during two of the worst hours in our history," Dayton declared during a Senate Governmental Affairs Committee hearing.

During the hearing, Dayton told leaders of the Sept. 11 commission, that, based on the commission's report, a NORAD chronology made public a week after the attacks was grossly misleading. The chronology said the FAA notified the military's emergency air command of three of the hijackings while those jetliners were still airborne. Dayton cited commission findings that the FAA failed to inform NORAD about three of the planes until after they had crashed.

And, he said, a squadron of NORAD fighter planes that was scrambled was sent east over the Atlantic Ocean and was 150 miles from Washington, D.C., when the third plane struck the Pentagon - "farther than they were before they took off."

Dayton said NORAD officials "lied to the American people, they lied to Congress and they lied to your 9/11 commission to create a false impression of competence, communication and protection of the American people." He told Kean and Hamilton that if the commission's report is correct, President Bush "should fire whoever at FAA, at NORAD ... betrayed their public trust by not telling us the truth."

Asked about Dayton's allegation, a spokesman for Colorado Springs-based NORAD said, "We stand on our testimony to the commission" and declined to discuss the 2001 chronology. Erin Utzinger, a spokeswoman for Dayton, said the senator "assumes the FAA knew of NORAD's coverup."

In the weeks ahead, we will be presenting a complete treatment of the old NORAD timeline and of "The Emperor's New Timeline" as spelled out in the Kean Commission report. This will be part of a series exposing the many Omissions of the Commission.

I know the date on this article is a month old, but I just heard on Fox News that two people from the FAA are going to be disiplined for lying to the 911 Commission.

When I find something more recent I will post it.

Make that 2 years old. I guess they just now resolved the issue.

If I recall correctly didn't Clinton put Gore in charge of reshuffling the chairs at the FAA when he was president?

I would assume that all those problems caused by the clintonista regime that caused Osama to declare war against the USA in 1996 and installed all the communist and other America-haters into the CIA and FBI and especially Dept of State ARE being fixed.

But ... if the Dept of State, CIA, and the FBI is any indication of Bush actually fixing any of this ... we ARE in big trouble insided our borders still.

This will be part of a series exposing the many Omissions of the Commission.

There were omissions? I am shocked.

[snicker] I hope that new series exposes the Gorelick connection. If it doesn't, it, too, is little more than a cover up of the cover up of the Cover Up Commission.

I certainly do not recall. Nevertheless, you have a point. Integrity and truth were not attributes of the Clintonistas.

There were failures everywhere and dems attacking one area after another seems to me to be the heigth of futility.

If they keep spinning their wheels like this, it should keep them busy while the sane adults take care of the country.

I guess I thought we elected those guys to do more than point fingers in a big circle at each other. We need new blood to represent we, the people, instead of the pathetic excuses for men (and women) who are taking big salaries and doing nothing for their country except trying their best to rip it to pieces.

Term limits would be a start.

..typical demorat ploy....try to put out bad news about the current administration to smooth out the clinton "FAILURES" which are about to become more and more evident despite the rats efforts.
..constant bellowing about Bush, denial about clinton..there must be a lot of finger pointing in the up coming docu-movies, but it will just confirm what we all know....

Yes, I know it is over two years old, but as I just said, Fox News just reported that two people who testified before the 911 Commission are going to be disciplined for lying to them.

I just can't find a more recent article.

Sorry, I am still looking for one.

Gore was charged with enhancing airline safety. The Commission he was in charge of recommended cockpit door reinforcements.

Tom Daschle's wife is the head of the airline lobbyist firm. They complained about the cost of reinforcing the doors and Gore backed down after the airline lobby paid tens of thousands of dollars into Clinton's re-election campaign.

There is back up to this somewhere around the web.

"Investigators found no evidence that aviation officials intentionally misled the Sept. 11 commission when they made inaccurate statements about their response to the 2001 terrorist attacks but recommended that two officials face "appropriate administrative action" for failing to correct the record, according to a report released yesterday."

Bingo. And Daschle's wife was one of the main airline lobbyists during all of that.

This article may need a thread of its own.

In fact, the Sept. 11 commission found, audiotapes and other evidence showed clearly that the military never had any of the hijacked airliners in its sights and chased a phantom aircraft -- American Airlines Flight 11 -- long after it had crashed into the World Trade Center.

The FAA had said on its Web site and in statements to the commission that it informed the Pentagon at 9:24 a.m. that American Airlines Flight 77 had been hijacked. The commission found that the FAA never notified defense officials of the hijackings but did label the plane missing after it had crashed into the Pentagon.

The FAA also omitted from official timelines the fact that it notified NORAD about the hijacking of Flight 93 at 10:07 a.m., after the airliner had crashed in Pennsylvania. It gave an earlier than actual time for the moment when an Air Force official joined an FAA "phone-bridge" focused on the hijackings.
