Beyond Macaca: The Photograph That Haunts George Allen
by MAX BLUMENTHAL
Barnstorming around Virginia in the re-election campaign that Republican Senator George Allen hopes will provide the impetus for his 2008 run for the presidency, he has suddenly been forced on the defensive. Time and again, he has felt compelled to explain that his mocking of S.R. Sidarth, a young Indian-American staff member for his Democratic opponent, as "macaca," or monkey, was an unintentional gaffe. "It was a mistake. I made a mistake," he told a reporter from a local NBC affiliate at a campaign stop on Thursday. Hours later, he told the ABC affiliate, "It was a mistake, I was wrong." On Fox News's Sean Hannity show, he echoed, "It was a mistake."
But was it an isolated "mistake"?
Only a decade ago, as governor of Virginia, Allen personally initiated an association with the Council of Conservative Citizens, the successor organization to the segregationist White Citizens Council and among the largest white supremacist groups.

And not a word on the KuKluxKlown Senator Byrd
No.
This is politics. If Allen can be taken out this early, he will be, because his enemies have no reason NOT to--would we go easy on a democrat if this kind of thing were in his past? No, nor should we.
If he can beat back this crap, he'll be in good shape. If not, why would we want him for a nominee?
May backfire as his name recognition increases.
So, theNation is picking on LaRaza again? Ooops. My mistake.
The uproar is itself a steaming pile of macaca. But it does appear he ain't too bright. Good man, bad judgment, trips over his words. We don't need another one.
Does that surprise you? This is The Nation, after all.
I know, I know. The "D" gives Byrd an immunity from his past. The SPLC is shameless.
This current affair certainly puts the last nail in the coffin of the idea that his opponent, Obergrupenfuhrer Webb, was not the author of the antisemitic attack on his Democrat competitor in the primary this Summer.
This is going to get dirtier.
The media is a tool (Dean's roar). The people that want someone out of the picture just have to drop a dime and it is on.
I await The Nation's call for Democrats to disassociate themselves from their Black Panther connnections in the past. No, I'm not holding my breath.
The social conservatives have raised questions on Allen's pro-life credentials. He proudly owns stock in Barr Pharmeceuticals, the maker of the "Plan B" emergency contraception, and he has made questionable statements on the pro-life issue in the past.
$1.00 U.S. says this photo was taken in a reception line at the NRA event for high dollar contributors and others who bought tickets at CPAC and that Allen and Heston had no idea who any of these guys were.
What? Is KKKleagle leader Byrd in the picture?
Oh, he was merely the Senate Majority Leader for 12 years...
You raise a fair question, but I have no doubt the left will make a lame attempt to rationalize the lionization of the ex-Klansman Byrd with, "but he's not running for president!!!"
Yet, they have no problem with him being senator. Their hypocrisy is astonishing.

Macacca means nothing. Macaque is a primate.
He should have called the guy a Hymie. That must be acceptable since that maca..., er, guy Jesse Jackson can say it.
