HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, Newfoundland (AP) An Egypt Air passenger flight carrying more than 300 passengers was diverted to Newfoundland on Monday after smoke was detected in the cockpit, an airport official said.
The Boeing 777 that departed from Cairo for New York City made a safe emergency landing in Goose Bay, said Kevin Aylward, CEO of Goose Bay Airport Corp.
The passengers stayed on the plane while maintenance workers repaired the problem.
"It's something they were able to fix very quickly," said Aylward. He said he didn't know what the exact cause of the smoke.
No fire was found and no one aboard was injured, he added.
Diverted trans-Atlantic flights often land in Goose Bay because of its location near the eastern tip of Canada and because it's also a military airport.

Sunday morning OHare, smoke so thick in the cockpit the pilots couldn't see a thing. Back down on ground 2.5 hrs. Never heard what the source of the smoke was on that flight.

Yea, especially after the relief pilot on that EgyptAir 767 plunged it into the ocean.

Never heard what the source of the smoke was on that flight.Maybe it was an exploding laptop. I've been wondering when they are going to ban laptops until THAT problem is sorted out. Has everyone here seen the video of the one that exploded at that conference in Japan (I think)? Can you imagine being on a plane when one of those fried like that?

Ever since I found goose bay on a map planning a dream vacation as far away as I could drive from where I live 4,000 miles to Goose Bay.
Next stop Unalaska, Alaska Key West Florida the back home via San Diego 18,026.5 miles plus side trips. Gas would run about $40,000. I haven't taken this trip yet.

Gas would run about $40,000. I haven't taken this trip yet. What are you driving, an M1A1?
Might come in handy at the border, I guess.
