Pilot Dies After Plane Crashes Into Pond; 3 Others Injured (Survived Asian Tsunami 20 mos ago)

INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis oral surgeon died and three other people were hospitalized with injuries after a small plane that the surgeon was piloting crashed into a retention pond on the city's west side Monday morning, officials said.

Dr. Robert Edesess was piloting the plane when it crashed into a pond at a housing subdivision near 21st Street and Raceway Road at about 10:40 a.m., officials said. The plane had just taken off from the Eagle Creek Airport en route to Hilton Head Island, S.C., said Gene Konzen, chief of the Wayne Township Fire Department.

A bystander jumped into the pond and pulled Edesess and three passengers out of the water, he said.

Edesess was sent to Methodist Hospital, where he died, a hospital representative said. Three passengers -- his wife, Poulfiri Edesess; his son, Jeremy Edesess; and Jeremy's girlfriend, Janet Adams, also were taken to a hospital.

Jeremy Edesess and Adams were in serious condition Monday afternoon, and Poulfiri Edesess was in fair condition, officials said.

Monday's crash came about 20 months after the Edesesses survived a tsunami while they were on an island boat tour in southeast Asia, 6News reported.

At Monday's crash site, a retention pond surrounded by homes, the plane partially submerged. A large red and white parachute was in the water next to the plane.

The plane is a Cirrus aircraft, designed to use a parachute to slow the plane as a safety measure. The parachute is 55 feet in diameter.

Investigators believe the pilot navigated the plane to land in the water and avoid homes.

"Kudos to that guy, because that's unfathomable. From the sky, that's not a very big target and he landed darn near in the middle of it," said Dave Day, who witnessed the crash. "If he had landed somewhere else, I don't think the outcome would've been as good."

Federal investigators will be called to determine what caused the crash.

Thanks for posting the picture. It looks like a bad week for airplanes.

I don't think he was navigating under a parachute.

I am watching this on the news now. One of the police officers felt that the people on the plane would not have been able to get out of the plane without the help of the people living in the area. It sounds like they heard the crash and did not hesitate to come to the victims aid....

That is possibly heroic flying to not hit the houses..too bad he didn't survive.

Also too bad Fox News has been reporting all day that all survived.

First thought that comes to mind is: did the chute deploy accidentally on takeoff? (remember Evel Knieval's Snake River Canyon jump?)

The survivors are lucky they crashed in Indianapolis, not New Orleans.  There the folks would have heard the crash and waited for FEMA to arrive and hand them a check.

Witnesses say the chute came out after some sputtering.

If they had crashed in NOLA, the Looter Guy would've shot the survivors and picked their pockets clean and stole their shoes before Nagin's Noble Fathom Police Krewe arrived.

So, who was being funny?

Seriously, I dread this boundary, but I absolutely believe that we may be approaching that sort of cusp.  We may be called to make a decision between "right and wrong" and the question will be continuing to allow Muslims to live among us, or perhaps to live at all.

This is not my desire.  It is my fear.

My wife is a member of the Baha'i faith, an off shoot of Islam.  Of course, they are perceived as being worse than Jews by the jihadis, as Baha'is are "heretics" who believe in a prophet after Mohamed and that's not allowed.  That makes killing them an automatic ticket to paradise and the 72 virgins (with probably a few bonus virgins thrown in for "good behavior").  This is particularly true among the Iranian extremists as Baha'i is a Persian sect, founded there in the 19th Century.  Ronald Reagan made the treatement of the Baha'i population in Iran (Persia) an issue during his presidency, but it wasn't sexy enough for our DBM.

The Baha'is have a prophecy that Muslims will do something to make them the most hated people on Earth.  I'm beginning to consider the horrifying possibility that this prophecy may have some basis in fact and that we may be approaching that event.

And that is what I fear.  Both for what they may do, for what we may do in response and for what that response will mean for all of humanity from that day forward.

But you don't have the luxury of a conscience if you and your family are dead, do you?

Very sorry, I thought I was responding to a comment on my post 7 of 10 on the thread Islamists not easy target.

To quote Emily Litella from the old Saturday Night Live.... never mind.

However, I have to save this text.  I KNOW I'll have to reuse it someday, probably soon.

Again, sorry about that.

I hate it when that happens... <g>
