This could have happened in the other Frisco (the City by the Bay) Or Idaho

There's even a very valid reason why he might have chosen day laborersIts more likely he chose day laborers 'cause they are far less likely to run to the authorities.
The guy was a chickenhawk, without a doubt.

[Hmmm, and they found the victims body naked in the closet...]
How did the dead artist's cloths come off? Is it common place for artist's to paint nude men in the buff?
Did the artist speak english? I might line up to defend this guy. Here is a defense summation:
Poor illegal Mexican youth gets picked up to presumably do "some work" for fair pay. When he is brought to the apartment, the language barrier becomes problamatic as the victim stripped off his cloths and began to help remove the defendants cloths to get him ready to pose naked. The defendant did not know what his english speaking temporary employer had in mind but seemed to be in the process or have the intent to sexually assault him. My client only defended himself from a sexual predator. He used deadly force to avoid being raped.

[To be fair, that may have been all it was. I painted both male and female nudes in art class back in college, and there was nothing erotic about it.]
In college, did you paint the subjects while you yourself was nude? How does this inhance an artist's ability to bring those human curves to life?
I am asking because I am not an artist and have never painted anyone nude (at least not on a canvas or paper and not with bushes...never mind)

An artist, I use nude models all the time, but, whether the models are male or female, young or old, ugly or beautiful, I keep it professional. The relationship is established up-front. Art is my business, and I comport myself like a businessman. There's nothing casual about the way I make my living. And although my living space adjoins my studio, the distinction between the two is self-evident and obvious. It's clear to the model that we're there to work.
It seems to me that Rodrigez, even if he was a legitimate artist and not a hustler or predator or whatever, by drawing or painting these models in his apartment, opened himself up to misunderstanding and--ultimately--disaster.
As an aside, because I'm single, I get some ribbing from friends who make nudge-nudge, wink-wink noises and the like when they meet some of my more attractive female models (clothed). It is hard to explain, but when I'm working, I'm not seeing them romantically. I see them as line and form. There's nothing sexual about it at all. When I paint very attractive women, I note their beauty, of course, but it's more of an analytical appraisal than anything else. It's all about context, I suppose.

He sure fits the profile of a sexual predator. Targeting young males - vulnerable ones - wanting them nude, alone with him in his apartment - in San Francisco! - and found naked. There's not enough here to convict, but the signs that provoke suspicion are all over.

That makes THREE keyboards (one from another thread) now I'm in hock for. Maybe I should go liberal. That would at least get rid of any humor problems I have.
