FARMERS BRANCH ... residents crowded into the council chambers to discuss whether the city should restrict illegal immigrants through such measures as making it illegal for landlords to lease property to them; fining businesses that employ them; making English the city's official language; and halting funding for children of illegal immigrants to participate in ... youth programs.
Those ideas, by council member Tim O'Hare, were borrowed from ordinances adopted by Hazelton, Pa., and under consideration by cities in California, Florida and elsewhere.
Mayor Pro Tem Ben Robinson had more ideas. He suggested that the council also consider prohibiting the assembly of day laborers; requiring contractors to abide by all federal laws, including immigration laws; and having police who question the residency papers of people they encounter on traffic stops or accidents make copies of those documents and submit them to immigration officials.
... the overall audience was largely supportive,...

Mayor Bob Phelps said the council will take action, and it should be interesting.
LULAC, the American Criminal Liberties Union, all the usual suspects are "outraged, outraged I tell you!".
The state representative from this area is going to be retiring soon.
I have a suggestion as to who should replace him:
Tim O'Hare

Is it "foot shooting" to refuse to spend your money on those who are here illegally?
Any more so than to refuse to spend it on any other social welfare programs?

Children of illegal aliens who are born in the U.S. are not here illegally.
Irregardless of the law (I don't like it either), we will not win this fight by targeting children. This falls under the rubric of choosing your battles carefully....

But do lets let the city of Farmers Branch conduct their own battles, eh?

"Children of illegal aliens who are born in the U.S. are not here illegally."According to some.
But more to the point, children not born here, of illegals, are also illegal.

Targeting children, especially if they are legal citizens by birth, WON'T work.

According to some.
According to the Supreme Court. Congress can probably change the law, but until they do, that IS the law.
But more to the point, children not born here, of illegals, are also illegal.
This is true. But do you really want the anti-illegal immigration efforts seen as targeting children? Don't get me wrong, I think they should all be thrown out. But appearances matter, and with the MSM so capable of making us out to be the bad guys, is it so smart to give them this ammunition?

Children of illegal aliens who are born in the U.S. are not here illegally. And they can stay here - sans their illegal parents. If their parents want to take them with them upon their deportation, they should be able to do so provided they forfeit the childs US citizenship. See, there is always a compassionate solution.

No, but I live closer the the Mexican border than you do, and the problems I see are probably several times worse than what you see.

You stated:
"According to the Supreme Court." in reference to illegals born in the United States being US citizens.
Do you have a link to your support for that premise. I have been unable to find a supreme court decision to that effect. I found two that said "Not So".
[From Wikipedia "The Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution provides an additional source of constitutional doctrine that emphasizes birth "in the United States" AND subjection to U.S. jurisdiction at the time of birth, as the defining elements of citizenship (other than citizenship by naturalization):]
From the amendment:
"All persons born or naturalized in the United States AND subject to the Jurisdiction thereof, are Citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. . ." Amendment XIV, section 1.

I guess it depends on your perspective. To many, taking this action is necessary to protect OUR OWN CHILDREN.....
MOTHERS AGAINST ILLEGAL ALIENS - (MAIA)
* Mission Statement *
MOTHERS AGAINST ILLEGAL ALIENS - (MAIA)
MAIA - MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of Mothers Against Illegal Aliens (MAIA)
is to protect the LEGAL American Children.
The Mission of Mothers Against Illegal Aliens (MAIA) is to bring awareness to and educate the LEGAL American Mothers and families whose children are the silent victims of this Invasion of Illegal Aliens into the USA.
To be the VOICE and PROTECTOR of the LEGAL CHILDREN who are unable to protect their future.
To be the VOICE for the LEGAL CHILDREN and VICTIMS who have been harmed by the activity of illegal aliens in the USA.
To Unite in solidarity Legal Mothers and families together to make it possible for, Americas Children to, once again - be the future of America.
Our beautiful Nation has been turned into a jungle by the mass invasion of illegal aliens - the streets of America; the neighborhoods and communities where we live; the malls and stores where we shop; the schools where our LEGAL children attend - and yes, even the churches where we worship - are now the Citadels of fear, bigotry, racism, physical danger and hate! The LEGAL children of Americas 21st century have become the scapegoats and the victims of this invasion of illegal aliens. They have become - the get behind, the left behind, the back of the class, the back of the bus, the get off the playground, the get out of my way - pawns and victims of peer abuse and societal indifference.
As Americans, most of us have come from other countries, as many of our grandparents struggled and went through the Legal process to become a Legal American.
What we have in America presently is not Legal Entry into America, we have millions of people entering ILLEGALLY! The Illegal Aliens need to follow the law that our ancestors did, and if they want to become American citizens, let them do it the Legal way.
It is Critical to the future of our country that our borders are protected and illegal aliens are stopped from flooding our Nation.

The law reads in part, "subject to the jurisdiction...".
I question whether that really is the law or whether it is just the way it has been applied.
