Let's make Cosby's passion our own
Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel ^ | 19 Aug 06 | Eugene Kane

This time he wasn't here to save black Milwaukee from the demons that plague us.

This time it was just another gig.

But Bill Cosby still cares about the issues he's been talking about all over the country in a one-man campaign to send a message to African-Americans about personal responsibility, good parenting and the need for education.

Even when Cosby's mainly in town to make people laugh, the plight of black America is never far from his mind.

"message to African-Americans about personal responsibility"

Why is this necessary? Everyone knows about personal responsibility. It's a choice. To pretend otherwise is to excuse.

I was struck by the noises that Hillary made about education to a middle class audience. Fine, preach to the choir - but what about saying the same thing to the people Bill Cosby is talking to???

Preaching to the choir wins you no points for courage.

From Eugene? Yes, for a moment. He still has a LONG, LONG way to go. He usually makes his living by playing the race card.

From the article:

Cosby took his knocks from his critics - as some of you might remember, I was initially one of them - but refused to back down.

... After writing about Cosby in a 2004 column that prompted a phone call from the man himself, I've had an incredible opportunity to get to know the person behind the celebrity.

Nice of him to do "research" (!?!) AFTER writing the article.
