UNARMED police were sent to search homes in the airline terror plot - despite a cache of weapons being uncovered in one house.
It is thought police chiefs did not want to risk another bungle like the Forest Gate raid or the shooting of Brazilian Jean Charles de Menezes.
But a senior intelligence source said: "The decision not to go in with armed officers was dicing with death. What would have happened if the came up against an armed suspect?
All 23 arrests in High Wycombe, Walthamstow and Birmingham were carried out by Metropolitan Police's unarmed Territorial Support Group.

Sending UNARMED police against terrorists.
I think it will take a terrorist nuke, before people give up their fine PC notions.
PING
Ohhhh GEEESH - I don't even know what to say to this one. Insane is right.
wow
good lors. I heard they also tipped off all the major mosques although I could not find that story.
Not to mention this is a calling-all-cars heads-up to the terrorists that they have nothing to fear when the door gets kicked in. Nice piece of reporting.
Oh, with the current British logic in effect, a terrorist nuke would lead the British government to immmediately declare themeslves a nuclear-free nation and dump all their atomic weapons.
lors is the one true Gos.
They just wanted to make sure the police wouldn't actually hurt those darling terrorists who planned to blow up ten planes with thousands of innocents.
That's worse than taking a knife to a gun fight.
There was a photo from LAX after the plot came out showing the soldiers guarding it... no clips in the guns.
bttt
To watch so called "enlightened" western nations going through these contortions of misguided morality is highly amusing.
It's going to be interesting to see what event or series of events finally cleanses western society of it's PC guilt, shame and fear.
Newsflash!
Armed only with harsh language, members of the Territorial Support Group advanced on a known terrorist safe house. As officers kicked down the door, they piled through the front entrance insulting the mother's of all present. The terrorists, deeply offended, laid down their AK-47's and immediately demanded a phone so they could call their legal team. The latest word is that the terrorist cell will be suing for severely hurt feelings. Calls to the TSG were not immediately answered. /s
Unlikely. Firstly, police armed with tanks, let alone handguns, would be rather ineffective against nukes.
More importantly, use of nuclear weapons by terrorists will just convince the loons to be even more strident and irrational about the subject of the phobias, such as guns and nukes.
"I think it will take a terrorist nuke, before people give up their fine PC notions".
There is no Gos but the lors, and GeronL is his prophet?
As for the UK, what I always say is never bring a billy-club to an AK-47 fight.
And that nastiness has begun. I can't find it now but last night the fox news site had a sotry of an unarmed solitary muslim in the UK getting mugged merely for his religion, as it appeared.
Speechless.
It is a lot easier to have a dead cop then crook.
Every body loves a dead hero.
Hey--this is BRITAIN, whaddaya expect. The Brits have been going wuss for the last fifty years (or more).
As far as I'm concerned, the main value of Britain today is to serve as an object lesson of WHAT NOT TO DO, and also of the superiority of a Constitutional Republic over a "parliamentary democracy".
Unfortunately, many of the "up-east" power structure think that the "British model" is JUST what the good old USA needs.
Grus Gott!
typo on #5
PC is getting bad over in the UK. Here too.

See? No MAGS (bullets) IN THE RIFLES...!
PC brits are going to get their cops killed.

Shooting first and straight while on a battlefield or a security detail is a matter of life or death. That's why weapons training normally gets the highest priority in the U.S. military.
If you're slow on the draw, you're dead, and your side loses.
Just ask the Marine guard in Lebanon in 1983 who didn't shoot fast enough when a kamikaze driver rammed his terror truck through the gate. It took the leatherneck one full second to chamber a round, another second to flip his weapon off safety and fire. By that time, the truck had smacked into the Marine billet he was securing and exploded. The Rules of Engagement forbade this expert rifleman from being locked and loaded even though his unit was on high alert for just such an attack. And those two seconds he lost arming his weapon cost 241 American lives.
Lesson learned: An unloaded weapon is useless. A lesson we've unfortunately learned and relearned the hard way over and over again.
Recently, the Navy dedicated a memorial to the sailors who were aboard the USS Cole when it was savaged last year by a terrorist attack in the port of Aden. But even though the members of the security detail on the Cole were at their posts on high alert -- in an extremely dangerous port where they'd already been warned that a terrorist attack was highly probable -- not one of their weapons had a round in the chamber. The security detail gave the small craft that almost sank the Cole and killed 17 sailors a big, friendly America wave, and the terrorists waved back -- just before they rammed their human torpedo into the ship. Again, the Rules of Engagement stated no weapons would have a round in the chamber.
-----------------
What doesn't he say here? That AFTER the USS Cole explosion, the Captain ordered men topside to guard against follow-up attacks WITHOUT AMMO --in order to prevent a "tragic accident".
I'm not kidding.
Speaking of "brazilians" -- we learned a bunch of things during the 2006 Lebannon War. One was that there's an awful lot of Lebannese Brazilians. Maybe it's the same beach culture -- or the ability to live comfortably rich and at the beach while the rest of the country is dirt poor. That's a family trait -- passed down as part of a family's heritage of mores and morals. The ability to totally ignore other human beings outside of your family and close social mix, except as those "beings" didn't not fold the napkins right, etc. Who knows?
Didn't this fool get relieved of Command?
L
But that kind of insanity persists:
Remember the much-vaunted act by W of putting Nat'l Guard troops on the border?
Here's the truth: turns out with the Rules of Engagement they've been handed, they're far from actually helping. Indeed, they are HURTING the mission of enforcing the border!
Sounds nuts, right? Unpatriotic? I wouldn't blame you...!
It's cuz the vaaaaast majority of them have no weapons at all, for political reasons. But those troops still need to be defended, right? They are targets for dollar-craving, drug-dealing Atzlan types.
So most BP are now under orders not to stray further than 5 min away from providing BACK-UP FOR THE UNARMED N.G....!
The BP call it, "Nanny Patrol".
Can you believe it? Truth is stranger than fiction....
The Marines were only permitted to have one round in the magazine.
After that was 'expended' we were told to try harsh language.
L
Article explains that NG sent to relieve BP in many cases ended up requiring physical protection by those very same BP they were sent to relieve.
I went to the airport a short time after 9/11. The troops "guarding" Lindberg field in San Diego also had M-16 rifles without the magazines installed. They should have traded for good hickory baseball bats. If all you get to hold is a club, it should be a good one. It's a poor way to use an M-16.
We are lucky that the local gangbangers didn't take advantage of the situation to confiscate select-fire capable rifles from the unarmed troops.
But they did have ammo, when they went to "arrest" six-year old Elian Gonzales.
