Gadhafi says he spoke with North Korea

TOKYO - Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi told a visiting Japanese official that his country has urged North Korea to give up efforts to develop weapons of mass destruction, the Foreign Ministry said Friday.

Iwao Matsuda, Japan's state minister for science and technology policy, held talks with Gadhafi in Sebha, about 375 miles south of Tripoli, on Wednesday, the ministry said in a statement issued Friday.

Gadhafi surprised the world in late 2003 when he swore off terrorism and announced plans to dismantle his country's weapons of mass destruction programs. Libya was eager to end his international isolation and economic hardships from United Nations and U.S. sanctions, and Gadhafi concluded the weapons programs were best used as a bargaining chip.

Gadhafi told Matsuda that Libya has been urging North Korea to follow his country's example and called for cooperation from developed countries including Japan in persuading Pyongyang, the ministry said.

Matsuda was the first Cabinet member to hold talks with Gadhafi.

Gadhafi expressed his hope that Japan's prime minister would visit Libya, the ministry said.

Next year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries. Matsuda was quoted by the ministry as saying that it will be desirable that the leaders of the two countries could reciprocate visits.

Re #2

I read that, too. I wonder what leverage Gadhafi has U.S. doesn't?

Maybe how good the life has become once he let his nuke go?

The trouble is that Kim has way too many enemies, and has no oil fields to survive on.

Gadhafi learned his lesson from a president who meant business. Nowadays Gadhafi asks his wife, "why go out on the town when we can stay home and get bombed?"

How old is this guy? He looked three hundred years old back in Reagan’s day and I’m sure he aged many years when Reagan bomb his butt. Got to be doing the “dirt nap” soon.

Landing a bomb outside his tent did reform him. If we did more often we would not be in the situation we are in.

Gadhafi & Kim Jong "Mentally Il" ?
now there's a couple of "Marys" for ya...
the only thing they "discussed" were their dressmakers. LOL

I'd like to "introduce" "Mentally Il" & AHMADI-NEJAD to a 7.62.

How many different spelling for the dictator of Libya? I have seen ten billion different spellings of his name over the last 20 years. There should be a universally accepted standard to his name.

"Maybe Reagan helped in onto the road to seeing the light."

I think his recent 'throwing in the towel' is a lot more than just reagan. While some here claim he is just lying and being tricky, any review of the PUBLIC items he has disclosed or surrendered to us pretty much negates that. I can only imagine the intelligence he has provided that has not run in the NYT yet.

My theories on his motives -

1) medical, as in possible terminal illness, meaning his country would be under control of someone he would rather not have his WMD program. ALso unknown personal events might have gradually changed his mind.
2) the new radical islam is certainly going to try to use an NBC weapon on the US one day, he might see the writing on the wall and want to get clean out of the business now before the crap hits the fan. He might even want to see the inevitiable bad end for this islamoterror stuff stopped now, because it is gonna get really bad for arabs if they pull something horrid off.
