On Racial Profiling- An open letter to Arab-Americans
The Prometheus Institute ^ | 8/16/2006 | Justin Hartfield

Racial profiling is a method of efficient law enforcement, and its here to stay. It makes no sense to give an 80 year-old grandmother a full luggage search. It especially makes no sense to let two thirty-something Arab-featured males wearing turbans pass through without inspection. Every single al-Qaeda terrorist has matched a similar description to the latter. It would be more egregious not to search them. This reality will remain until nineteen white, elderly women hijack commercial airliners.

I could be wrong, but I don't think that any of the 19 on 9/11 were wearing turbans.

PS

Calling Westerners Capitolistic, Zionist, Infidels that deserve nothing more than public beheadings is not a good approach to building tolerance and acceptance with the citizens of the civilized world.

Calling it "racial" profiling is a rhetorical trick.

There is no arab "race" or no moslem "race."

By calling it "racial" profiling enables them to label those of us who don't randomly select people to be searched "racists".

I always thought so too, then I heard a TSA agent on a talk show in Boston who confirmed finding guns/kvives/etc in the possession of old women on wheelchairs, in the bassinets of babies etc. The guy who wants to have the weapon don't care if they are searched... they think that old Grammy can sneak it on.

Agree. sb terrorist profiling. The Israelis have said we should look for terrorists not boxcutters or Arabs.

No question that Muslims, particularly those in the 15-40 year age range, deserve special attention. However, we can't overlook anyone completely. If the enemy is willing to put a liquid bomb into their own baby's bottle, there is clearly nothing they won't do.

In the Middle East, they have, on multiple occasions, kidnapped the family of a moderate, peaceloving Muslim (yes, they actually do exist) and forced him or her to become a homicide bomber or else have his entire family tortured and murdered. That tactic could work just as easily on a blue-haired grandmother from Minnesota.

We probably could use some sort of internal Super-Passport. It could be done with fingerprints and only given out to those who are carefully screened at a local office of Homeland Secuity.

While care must still be taken, a separate check-in line could be set up for those who have taken the time to get such credentials. I'm an Air Force Vet who once had a Secret clearance. There are tens of millions like me--good citizens with a perfectly clean record, and no document to prove it.

Most TSA agents we run across appear not to have the intelligence to identify a weapon if they were attacked with one.

Shhh ... the pc crowd on here doesn't like hearing things like that or that there in no such thing as a "hispanic" race either!

Profiling would be great if it worked. But the insaniacs only have to sneak one corn-fed, blond-hair, middle-America, converted Jihadist through security to break the profiling security barrier. Profiling is too easy to predict.

Actually they are very thorough with anybody in a wheelchair. If the person looks heavy or is wearing lots of clothing they are extra thorough.

Except for in certain obscure rural area, turbans are rarely worn by Arabic men today, and certainly not those traveling in the the West. Turbans are however, a religiously essential part of the Siik religion of India--people who are no terrorist risk to us.

It is when conservative writers make an obvious blunder like that...that they get (falsely) accused of bigotry--we need to be extra careful, even in the details.

Otherwise I agree whole heartedly with this column...Arabic looking people of all kinds should not be surprised or insulted by extra scrutiny--it is for their own safety as well as everyone elses.

When/if the Arab/Islamic peoples clean up their own houses and show no tolerance to terrorists or even their ideas, then and then only can they complain.

In theory you are correct--there is no guarantee that blonde, blue eyed moslems can not be terrorists.

However, with the exception of the English-convert shoe bomber, ALL the attempted and successful terrorist attacks were by people of Arabic ethnicity--and almost all being male, between the ages of 18 to 45.

So to say ethnicity is not one (major) indicator of the possibility of being a terrorist is politically correct nonsense.

? should I be amazed at how poorly written this piece is, in addition to the 'turban' canard?

Yes, the turban remark is stupid.

Bear in mind that the Pan Am Lockerbie disaster was probably an Anglo woman who brought the bomb on board. Hence, racial profiling would not have stopped it.

Also, more and more Anglos / Hispanics are joining Islam. Again, they don't match the profile.

So, on average profiling might work. But these scum will probably start using more and more (crazy) converts to do their work.

I am surprised that an Anglo family hasn't been kidnapped with the orders that one of the adults blow up a plane. Again, profiling won't work.

Don't we already profile criminals when we are searching for them? Don't we say "short white male" or "black female sporting a Cynthia McKinney hairstyle"? Don't we profile the people we hire so we don't get sued and don't get someone unqualified? Don't we profile when it comes to where we eat, shop or get our hair done? Don't we profile when it comes to who we date?
So how is it OK to profile criminals one way OUTSIDE of an airport, but we have to do it another way INSIDE?

I agree. Of course you're right. But profiling is a prescription for complacency. Remember, the TSA are FEDERAL WORKERS. If they think all they have to do is look for bearded turbans, that's all they'll do. And the terrorists will learn. And slip one by.

I'm not saying don't profile. I'm saying don't make it a policy, especially a stated policy.

The policy should be: Be flexible. Be smart.
