Dems say Hall ideal to seek old seat Studebaker's exit leaves party with need for candidate to run against Turner.

By Lynn Hulsey

Staff Writer

Local Democrats will not only need to find a candidate to run for Congress in place of Stephanie Studebaker on less than three months notice, but they'll also need to find someone who can quickly raise the money needed to beat an incumbent.

Montgomery County Democratic Party Chairman Dennis Lieberman said he thinks former U.S. Rep. Tony Hall might be just the guy.

A special primary election will be held to choose a Democrat to run against U.S. Rep. Mike Turner, R-Centerville. The date has not been set.

Citing family issues, Studebaker on Tuesday dropped out of the race for the 3rd Congressional District. She and her husband, Sam, were arrested Sunday and each charged with domestic violence.

Turner was elected in 2002 to fill the seat vacated by Hall, who left Congress after nearly 12 terms to become U.N. ambassador for the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture.

Hall left that job after 31?2 years, co-wrote a book and is now living in the Washington, D.C., area. He could not be reached Tuesday night.

Lieberman said Hall is one person who could bring in the outside financial support needed to win the race. Even before her withdrawal, Studebaker's campaign was struggling financially. As of June 30, Turner had $378,065 on hand and Studebaker had $37,551, according to Federal Election Commission reports.

Lieberman and Ohio Democratic Party spokesman Brian Rothenberg said the loss of Studebaker will not cost the party momentum and Democrats could gain from special election publicity.

"Obviously, anytime a situation like this happens it's better for people to have an opportunity to vote," Rothenberg said.

"I would expect whatever happens, this will be a competitive race," he said.

Turner could not be reached for comment.

Turner won with 60% in 04 and can't Tony Hall be as loopy as Cynthia McKinney sometimes?

Ohio's law are different than Texas's laws.

On the GOP side, Bob Ney (OH-18) dropped out last week and will be replaced by special primary election in September.

In OH-3 the Dems, will get to pick a replacemenet candidate too.

If Hall runs for this seat, two things will happen:

1. He will be the subject of endless fawning press coverage. The news media, especially the Dayton Daily Worker, gets all misty-eyed and sentimental when former Congressmen run for election again. They can't beat the "former warrior returns to battlefield to right some wrongs" story line. They are eating it up in Kentucky where Ken Lucas is running against Goof Davis and in Indiana where Baron Hill is going against Mike Sodrel.

2. Despite all this, Mike Turner will kick his tail. Hall's never run in Warren County, nor in Clinton or Highland Counties. He got out before the 2002 redistricting kicked in. This is where about a third of the votes come from, and it is heavy GOP.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge about the 3rd district.

You are correct the Dayton Daily Worker is slobbering all over themselves about a possible Tony Hall candidacy.

Several factors (D), different state means different election laws, and it is possible that the candidates did not have to go through a Clinton judge to get a decision.

And to think I gotta go to a "meeting" again to help them figure out how to endorse a "write-in" candidate tonight...

We're hosed...

I suggest anyone who gives a crap to vote for Bob Smither, Libertarian candidate...From what I see, he's top notch material, and said he'll caucus and vote with the Republicans while in office...

His Daughter was Laura Smither (murdered) a few years ago...

My linering question is if a Libertarian gets the seat, what happens to the House totals (to determine leadership)?

Could it come down to a balance of power in the end?

And remember there can always be a backroom negotiations among the Dems to thwart the will of the people and get a "post election" conversion to the Rats if it means they assume control.

Not saying that THIS seat would go Rat, just indicating that any of the other Republicans could be approached.

The way most of us who have been in the middle of this debacle do see it going to Lampson...

I could go on and on about how poorly our leadership at every level has played this it is rediculous...

I (and a small but principled group) tried to do what we could to keep this thing above board and follow the law, so that there was no way the liberals could make anything stick...

But our leadership had a different idea and agenda...And look where that got us...I believe they did thinkthey were doing the right thing for the right reasons, but some viewed this process as a "feather" in their cap, and a way to position at certain levels of our government, namely position some people to take advantage of an open seat in the state legislature, blah blah blah...

Tell you what, if you make it to Jim's get together in the 23rd of September...And remind me, I'll be glad to fill you in on ALL the gory details...

It ain't pretty...And by then we should all know how this is really going to play out by then...

Remind me...Its too much to type here...I could write a book!

You got that right...

I just got through talking to him and asked him if he was going to be in the Pearland area tonight...

I told him he should seriously consider popping in and woo-ing the crowd...

There have been a few folks I know who have and are planning on calling him to do that...

This is going to be either to gut-wrenching, or too funny to watch...

I haven't even been tuning into KSEV's local hosts as much in the past few months so while I've heard some discussion of it there, they've seemed to move on more to national issues.

Issues that I get better coverage from Laura Ingraham (an extra hour online), Michael Medved, and others.

Edd Hendee and Dan Patrick (and his son) and the other guest hosts could discuss these issues, I guess I may be missing it when they do.

And I believe that you have much more knowledge about it being closer to the whole issue. It just strikes me as yet another issue where the local GOP doesn't seem to have the constituents interests at heart.
