Up to 50 people worldwide may have been part of the alleged conspiracy to explode bombs on aircraft heading from Britain to the US. New details about the plot are contained in a briefing document from the counterterrorism section of the New York Police Department.
"Bombs were to be placed on up to 10 different airliners," the document says. "Explosives were to be detonated mid-flight over the Atlantic Liquid explosives were to be used as the main charge [They] would have been smuggled on board then assembled on board."
It says three terrorists would have been assigned to each aircraft. Twenty-three people, who were arrested last Thursday are still being questioned.
In another sign of the global nature of the investigation, 15 more people were reported to have been arrested in Pakistan.
But most attention is still focused on a Briton, Rashid Rauf, who was arrested in Pakistan and has been described by British and Pakistani authorities as a key player in the alleged plot.
The transfer last year of millions of dollars from Britain to a Pakistani charity involved in earthquake relief helped investigators uncover the plot, according to two senior Pakistani intelligence officials.
They claimed that a large portion of the money sent from Britain to the charity was siphoned off and ultimately used to prepare for the attacks.
About £5 million ($12 million) was transferred to Pakistan, but it is claimed that less than half was used for relief operations after the earthquake last October, which killed tens of thousands of people.
The Pakistani officials did not identify the charity, but The New York Times reported on Monday that investigators are focusing on Jamaat-ud-Dawa, a charity that is a front for Lashkar-e-Taiba, an Islamic militant group.
* Britain's airports were thrown into confusion on Monday when the Department of Transport decided to ease restrictions and allow passengers to each take one small bag onto an aircraft.
The decision, which was announced early in the morning, caught airports by surprise. While some were able to comply by the time the first passengers arrived, others could not. Up to 20 per cent of flights were cancelled.
The ban on taking fluids on board - including cosmetics, water, contact lens solution and hair gel - remains in force.
As of today there are still some on the left who say the entire thing is a Bush Administration hoax.
Can you believe that?
I wonder how they read them their rights?
On saturday, one caller to an obscure weekly show on WRKO said it all goes back to when Bush stole the election in Florida.
I don't think they did. I bet they were found due to information "volunteered" by the previously arrested plot conspirators were "persuaded" to talk by the ISI.
Good question. I'm also wondering what it means to be under arrest in Pakistan. What "procedures" they follow, etc.
God bless the Brits. My son and 33 high school classmates made it home safely from London yesterday. 11 hour bus ride from Edinburgh to London (flight was cancelled...), 7 hour wait at Heathrow, 2 hour wait on the tarmac before takeoff, 11 hour flight to SFO. Seeing them walk through the gate- PRICELESS!!
We gave the flight crew a standing ovation for delivering them safely!
"I'm also wondering what it means to be under arrest in Pakistan"
I'm sure that none of the things it means are good.
Glad to hear your good news.
I don't care what your religion is; if you find yourself stealing from a charity meant to help desperate earthquake victims in your country, in order to fund a plot to kill yourself and the the citizens of the country that donated the money in a spectacular mid-Atlantic fireball, maybe you need to shop around for your spiritual needs.
I know God works in mysterious ways and all, but at what point do you not look around and ask yourself, "What the hell am I doing?"
Thanks for the informative link.

... or that by catching the islamonazis before they murdered thousands on Airliners; it is evidence that we are NOT safer today than pre 9/11... or that Iraq has inflamed the jihadis. They were inflamed during the entire klintoon administration, killing thousands while the pr!ck-in-chief diddled. What kind of twisted, self-loathing wussies are these leftist pukes?!
LLS
FYI
Good stuff. Thanks for the ping.
Good stuff...nice to see you again Cap.
Sorry two guys would not have been enough...the passengers would have beat the crap out of them.
As I understood it, they had several different mixtures brought on by different folks, then mixed together in flight.
What I don't understand is would the soda cans/sports bottles have been big enough to bring down a 747?
Apparently. Just gotta rupture a hole near the wing or into the fuel tank.
