Sounds soooo familiar. It's like the world is grey, sounds are muted and everything either hurts too much or you feel nothing. It's like the volume control on feelings has been snapped off...
And yeah, why is it that those with clinical depression always are related to a moron who says 'well, why don't you just think happy thoughts?'

When I was the Office Manager for a Psychiatrist we had a lovely lady as a patient who went to a job interview. The HR person told her that because she was being treated for depression and anxiety disorder, they may not give her the job that she was highly qualified for.
I wrote a note to the HR person stating that one would not skip a qualified candidate who was using Insulin for Diabetes nor one who had nitroglycerine for a heart condition. Zoloft and Xanax are the same thing.
She got the job.
