Ignatius stops sale of Charlotte Church works after singer's TV pilot

LONDON - The U.S. publishing company Ignatius Press has refused to sell any works by Welsh singer Charlotte Church after she called German-born Pope Benedict XVI a Nazi and mocked the Catholic Church.

The directors of Ignatius Press said they were offended when the Welsh singer mocked the Catholic Church in the pilot of a proposed eight-part television chat show.

Church, dubbed the "Voice of an Angel" before she turned her talents to popular music, also dressed up as a nun and pretended to hallucinate while eating "communion" wafers imprinted with smiling faces signifying the drug Ecstasy.

She smashed open a statue of the Virgin Mary to reveal a can of hard cider inside, said she worshipped "St. Fortified Wine," and stuck chewing gum on a statue of the child Jesus.

Ignatius Press announced that Church's products have been withdrawn from its Web site and catalogue.

"It is with regret that we do this," the company said in a statement to its customers on its Web site, www.ignatius.com.

"Miss Church possesses a great gift from God, and in the past she has used her talent often to offer praise and glory to Our Lord," the statement said.

"We cannot stand by a young woman who uses her stature in the media to mock the Eucharist, slander the Holy Father, and denigrate the vows of religious women," it continued.

"Therefore, our catalogues and Web site will immediately withdraw all compact discs, cassette tapes, DVDs and VHS tapes that feature Miss Church. Please join us in praying for this troubled young woman," the statement added.

Church declined to comment.

Church, 20, was raised a Catholic and sang for Pope John Paul II at the Vatican at the age of 12.

The pilot for "The All New Charlotte Church Show" was filmed before a live studio audience July 12.

Ignatius Press was founded by Father Joseph Fessio, a California Jesuit who studied under the future Pope Benedict at the University of Regensburg in Germany in the 1970s and who continues to be a close friend.

Pope Benedict, the son of a German policeman opposed to Nazism, was forced into the Hitler Youth movement as a child, and during World War II he served briefly in an anti-aircraft battalion

I can read and speak just a little Welsh. 3 of my four grandparents were first generation Welsh-American. My mother's maiden name was Mwr (Moore). My grandmother on my father's side's maiden name was Powys (Powers).

My Great-great grandfather came to the US as a boy in 1860. When I was a tot, he used to hold me on his lap and sing "Men of Harlech" in Welsh. Couldn't understand a word but I clapped and cheered just the same.

"What in hell is wrong with these people? Is this a calculated move to get away from a goody-goody image?"

- This isn't the first I've heard of her brat like behavior. Apparently, she was "discovered" at the age of 12 by some agent or promoter who engineered her early career moves and initial popularity. Once she became well known, she and her parents dumped the guy in a particularly brutal fashion. The other negative report I've read was that a few years ago backstage at one of her concerts she was asked to meet with a small group of handicapped children. Since the meeting wasn't in her approved schedule, she flew into a loud verbal rage and refused to see them.
She seems to have allowed her early talent to give her a bad case of the prima-donna's , but this latest incident smacks more of mental illness. After all, her appeal has always been to the religious crowd, not the teeny bopper fans, so this anti Church behavior is particularly self destructive.

I think Mel Gibson is a little better known to Americans than Charlotte Church.

That is lovely that you can speak and read a little Welsh. It is the most difficult language.

So your family belongs to one of the (seven? ten? fifteen?) most commonly named Welsh surname families, lol, just like my family.

Ever try tracing your family tree in Wales? Believe it or not, I was able to trace back to the early 1800s without actually traveling there. That was sheer luck though.

I'm second generation Welsh. My Grandmother first moved to the US and stayed with her sister, then met my Grandfather later.

My Aunt can still sing most of Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau in Cymru. I can sing just a few words here and there, lol!

"We're not worshiping statues."

You're right but after all this time some still want to believe that praying before an image is the same thing as praying to an image.

oh no never, what she said was distorted by the media. She loves America. In fact, She has an undying love for America and she would never choose to offend the place that holds a special place in her heart. Yes, that is true . . that and the fact that Scientology is not mind controlling sci-fi cult and islam is not a backwards death cult.

Statues in churches are an abomination.

The Sox put one of Carlton Fisk up in the centerfield bleachers - does that knot your panties?

I actually did. My great grandfather's older brother was killed at Isandlwana. He was in Lieutenant Younghusband's company. Hardly a person in Wales didn't have an ancestor killed at Isandlwana. The Zulu wiped out a whole regiment of our boys in an afternoon.

Hey, at least my surname isn't Jones or Williams.

From what I've read, she's not only fat, she's also a drunk.

Now it sounds like she's trying to fit in better with the wasted celeb crowd who've probably been giving her a hard time about her Catholic upbringing. I'm not Catholic, but it seems the world of celebs won't have you at their parties if you are an overt Christian, especially a Catholic.

Don't bother. These people and their hate of catholics are no different than people who hate jews.

Show me that in YOUR Bible, it isn't in mine! Roman Catholicism: The religion that brought you to the Dark Ages, and the Inquisitions...

You can just as easily substitute RC Church Where it says Jew...

Romans 3

God's Faithfulness

1What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision? 2Much in every way! First of all, they have been entrusted with the very words of God.

3What if some did not have faith? Will their lack of faith nullify God's faithfulness? 4Not at all! Let God be true, and every man a liar. As it is written:

"So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge."

5But if our unrighteousness brings out God's righteousness more clearly, what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing his wrath on us? (I am using a human argument.) 6Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world? 7Someone might argue, "If my falsehood enhances God's truthfulness and so increases his glory, why am I still condemned as a sinner?" 8Why not say—as we are being slanderously reported as saying and as some claim that we say—"Let us do evil that good may result"? Their condemnation is deserved.

No One is Righteous

9What shall we conclude then? Are we any better[b]?

Not at all! We have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under sin. 10As it is written:
"There is no one righteous, not even one;
11there is no one who understands,
no one who seeks God.
12All have turned away,
they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
not even one."
13"Their throats are open graves;
their tongues practice deceit."
"The poison of vipers is on their lips."
14"Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness."
15"Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16ruin and misery mark their ways,
17and the way of peace they do not know."
18"There is no fear of God before their eyes."

19Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. 20Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.

Righteousness Through Faith

21But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement,[i] through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

27Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of observing the law? No, but on that of faith. 28For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law. 29Is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, 30since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith. 31Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.

We are all "gentiles", who are not Jews by birth... and we all belong to the same church, if we are Christians, whether it is in Rome, Italy, or Rome, Georgia!

...my membership in the RC faith, as you put it, is in fact an article of trust and belief, not an abject cry for me to saved to the exclusion of others who believe otherwise...but of course anyone with reasoning abilities knows that already. Not only is your cross empty, but your logical faculties are sorely wanting as well. That you hate Catholicism is your cross to bear, not we Catholics'...

The 'particularly brutal fashion' in which Church's Svengali, Jonathan Shalit was 'dumped' in 2000 was when Shalit gladly accepted an estimated 2 million pounds sterling from the 14 year old Charlotte who had refused to sing if she had to be in the presence of Shalit again.

Charlotte Church's Mother warned that it would cost a lot of money if she were to dismiss Shalit, but Charlotte insisted.

At the time of Jonathan Shalit's dismissal, there were also allegations that Mr. Shalit had engaged in "improper tactile handling" of Charlotte Church but no official charges were ever brought to light.

A July 23, 2006 article from IC Wales finds this interesting note:
"...Jonathan Shalit, who struck gold after signing up the 12-year-old singer after spotting her on a talent show, has reportedly been approached by the BBC for a Louis Theroux-style documentary.

But Shalit, who was famously dumped as Charlotte's manager, politely turned them down.

"I had to say no," he said. "A puppeteer should never reveal how he pulls his strings."
