Swanton Woman Killed in Fiery Crash on Indiana Toll Road
Aug 3, 2006 06:46 AM PDT
BRISTOL, INDIANA (AP) -- A semitrailer plowed into vehicles stopped in a construction zone on an interstate highway, killing the truck driver and four members of a family, including an Ohioan, police said Wednesday. The fiery crash occurred about 4 p.m. Tuesday about 20 miles east of South Bend, said state police spokesman Sgt. Trent Smith.
The Indiana Toll Road, which runs on Interstates 80/90 through the area, was closed while crews cleaned up the wreckage.
A preliminary investigation showed that three vehicles, including a van, were stopped in the right lane when the semitrailer struck one of the vehicles, authorities said. Neighbors reported three booms as fire enveloped some of the vehicles.
The victims in the van were identified as Angela Lindner, 39, of Illinois; her children, Danny, 3, and Adrian, 1; and her mother, Dorothy Meller, 64. Family members tell us Meller lived between Swanton and Delta, to the west of Toledo. The semitrailer driver was identified as Clyde Roberts, 57, of Wisconsin.
The driver of another vehicle suffered a head injury, police said.
Quagmire.
Wonder if someone fell asleep.
Take away the cars.
Bush's fault. And we need to ban those cars. They kill people obviously, right?
Car control! We must have car control! Won't someone pull-ease think of the children!
Seriously, this puts the military deaths in the fight against global islamofacisism in perspective.
Rest assured that I, for one, feel your pain. :)
There are too many fools behind the wheels of motor vehicles who shouldn't be trusted with such a responsibility. I see them every day running stop signs, weaving through traffic, and blasting through crowded parking lots. Frankly I'm surprised that number isn't 286,720.
But damn, 28,672 automobile deaths in the United States this year. Compare that to the 2,200 U.S. deaths in the War on Terror since 2001. I think the anti-war nuts need to focus on shutting down our nations highways.
It's just too easy to get a driver's license.
I missed it. :0)
My bad.
BTW- I like your profile page.
thanks!
Automobiles - about 128 deaths every day. Murders - about 47 deaths every day. Hospital infections - about 241 deaths every day.
At this point, duct taping the windows and staying inside sounds like a pretty good idea...
Amen to that!

That, too!
A good friend of mine drives a cement truck. Wednesday morning, he barely managed to stop when an idiot on a cell phone crossed the center line and caused a major accident right in front of him. He got out of his truck to check on a motorcyclist who had dumped his bike because of the crap on the road when some moron in a pickup truck almost ran over him getting out of the traffic jam. My friend was not even in the accident and he was shaken up pretty bad - he was also the first one to see the driver who had caused the wreck in the first place, messily deceased.
The hundreds of thousands of police officers on traffic duty every day in this country could cut that nonsense in half in a month if they were so assigned. And yet we choose to send them out to hide behind billboards with radar guns instead.
